Bodenseekreis stretches along almost the entire northern shore of Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg; to the east, it reaches into the West Allgäu foothills and the Upper Swabian hill country. Bodenseekreis includes 57.7 kilometres of Lake Constance shoreline. The landscape is shaped by the lake and the adjoining hills, with orchards, vineyards, meadows and forests. This brings together several themes for planning a trip: lakeside scenery, nature, museums and cultural monuments.

Would you mainly like to experience nature, visit museums, enjoy thermal baths or discover cultural history? Use the visits you have planned as a starting point when choosing your base, and focus your accommodation search accordingly.

Pile dwellings: Stone Age and Bronze Age villages

The Unteruhldingen Pile Dwelling Museum is Germany’s oldest archaeological open-air museum. The visitor route leads through Stone Age and Bronze Age villages and includes the ARCHAEORAMA multimedia show: take a virtual dive to the pile dwellings in Lake Constance. The site also features the DISCOVERER TRAIL. At the pile-dwelling cinema, experimental archaeologists introduce visitors to historical house-building techniques. A visit thus combines insights into prehistoric villages with an underwater perspective through multimedia and an exploration of ancient building methods.

Nature, thermal bathing and distinctive landscapes

Eriskircher Ried is the largest and most valuable nature reserve on the German shore of Upper Lake Constance, offering visitors opportunities to experience local nature. The Eriskirch Nature Conservation Centre complements this with natural history guided tours and lectures throughout the year, as well as special activities for children. These activities provide a specific point of interest for planning a trip with children, while the year-round tours and lectures focus on natural history.

The Bodensee-Therme Überlingen combines thermal bathing, sauna infusions, its own bathing beach, and panoramic views of Lake Constance and the Alps. Its thermal water is drawn from a depth of more than 1,006 metres and flows into all the warm-water pools. This makes a visit to the thermal baths an option to plan as a separate focus alongside nature and museum attractions.

Museums from technology to everyday history

The Dornier Museum Friedrichshafen has nearly 400 exhibits across 6,000 square metres, including 14 original aircraft and a helicopter. The Auto & Traktor Museum on Lake Constance displays 350 vehicles illustrating 100 years of urban and rural life. Both museums offer a hands-on introduction to technology and transport, but each focuses on a different historical perspective.

The Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen offers public workshops, guided tours, lectures, discussion groups and DIY activities. The individual events vary. Those interested in regional trade history can find information about the trading expeditions of the Counts of Humpis at the Museum im Humpisschloss.

Cultural history and culinary pleasures

Salem Abbey and Palace was founded as a Cistercian monastery in 1134 and is one of the most beautiful and significant cultural monuments in the Lake Constance region. A wine tasting featuring four selected Lake Constance wines from the Meersburg Winemakers’ Association takes place every Thursday in the historic setting of Meersburg Castle. As the schedule may change, check before your visit that the date fits your plans.

If you would like to include hiking in your stay, you could also consider the 53-kilometre SeeGang premium hiking trail. It connects Konstanz and Überlingen. Conditions along the route can vary; check them before your hike. This allows you to factor the hiking option into your plans based on its stated length and the two named endpoints.
