Rümmingen – Wine Trails, Pilgrimage History and Village Culture
Accommodation in Rümmingen
Vineyards, scenic hill trails and a small St. James’ Church in the village square give Rümmingen its own character. There are also literary connections, a historic steam railway and a cultural programme in the chapel. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these different aspects separately: would you mainly like to hike, discover local history or plan a train ride?
Hiking among vineyards and viewpoints
Hiking trails over the hills lead to panoramic views across the Kandertal valley, the Basel region and the Vosges in nearby Alsace. The Wii-Wegli routes also pass through vineyards, offering views across the Rhine Valley to the Vosges in neighbouring Alsace. Around Rümmingen, both elevated viewpoints and vineyard landscapes take centre stage.
The Markgräfler Wii-Wegli is a wine-hiking trail network more than 92 kilometres long, between Grenzach-Wyhlen, Weil am Rhein and Freiburg im Breisgau. A different broad-scale perspective is offered by the western variant of the last two stages of the Westweg: it leads from the Markgräflerland through the Kandertal valley to Basel. If you are planning a longer hike, check the route in advance; descriptions of these long-distance trails refer to their respective routes, not just to Rümmingen.
Pilgrimage trail, village church and literary connections
The Markgräfler section of the Himmelreich St. James Way runs through vineyards and orchards directly to Rümmingen’s village square. The small St. James’ Church stands there. In the early 16th century, it served as a pilgrimage church dedicated to St. James. The history of the church building goes back even further: in 1505, residents of Rümmingen built a chapel for the village; in 2005, the Protestant parish celebrated the 500th anniversary of St. James’ Church.
Those interested in literary history will find picture and text panels about J. P. Hebel along the Hebel Hiking Trail. The trail also passes historic buildings and locations associated with his poems and life. At around 60 kilometres, it extends from the source of the Wiese on Feldberg all the way to Basel, well beyond a stroll through a single village. The history of the church and trails thus offers a different focus from the wine routes: here, the emphasis is on the connection between landscape, pilgrimage traditions and literary sites of remembrance.
Culture and excursions on the Kandertal Railway
Kulturo Rümmingen organises the recurring “Culture in the Chapel” series, with concerts, theatre and cabaret. The individual programmes may vary. For a train ride, you can board the historic steam railway at Rümmingen station on Schallbacher Straße. Rümmingen is a stop on the Kandertal Railway at kilometre 4.5. The historic steam railway runs for 13 kilometres from Haltingen through the Kandertal valley to Kandern. If the ride is a key part of your plans, check the current operating days and timetable in advance.
The sports facilities on Schallbacher Straße are also part of the local leisure offering; these include a beach volleyball court. Along the Markgräfler Wii-Wegli, inns, garden restaurants and traditional Straußenwirtschaften serve regional wines and food. These places to stop are one regional feature of the wine trail and complement its scenic character.
When choosing accommodation in Rümmingen, you can start by considering the focus of your plans: vineyards and views, pilgrimage and literary history, or the historic railway. This lets you choose the setting for your stay to suit the experiences that interest you most, without combining the different trails and offerings into a single excursion itinerary.
