Bietigheim-Bissingen offers a range of ways to shape your stay: architectural and art history, as well as routes that highlight the Enz, rafting and steep vineyard slopes. You can focus your trip on historic sites and art, or put activity and scenery at the center. The specific differences between the sights and routes can help you decide what matters most to you.

Architectural history from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance

Bietigheim’s town fortifications date back to 1364. The Old Enz Bridge was built between 1463 and 1467 under the direction of Aberlin Jörg. The town wall and battlement walk were restored in 1984. These dates mark different points in the town’s architectural history: from the fortifications and bridge construction to later restoration.

Hornmoldhaus also has a clearly defined place in history: the Hornmold family had it built in 1535/36. Its almost entirely preserved Renaissance interior paintings are particularly noteworthy. If you are interested in architecture, you will find not only the year it was built but also a specific insight into the design of its interior. Together with the bridge and town fortifications, it offers a varied way to explore the history of the town rather than focusing on a single building.

Art venues and finding your way around the old town

The Municipal Gallery Bietigheim-Bissingen is in Bietigheim’s old town, at the upper end of the pedestrian zone on Hauptstraße and opposite the castle. From Ellental stop, it is about an eight-minute walk to the gallery. Buses from Bietigheim-Bissingen station continue from the ZOB. If you are planning a visit to the gallery, these two arrival options can help you find your way.

Villa Visconti is associated with another distinctive artistic detail: it has more than 300 portrait heads. These offer two different points of interest—the gallery’s location on Hauptstraße and the many depictions at the villa. When planning your visit, these specific distinctions may be more interesting than a general list of sights.

Discover rafting, the Enz and steep vineyards on foot

The Rafting Trail connects the landscape with the history of the timber trade. Its 17 information boards document rafting and the timber trade on the Enz from the 14th to the 19th century. The route is 15 kilometers long and runs from Besigheim station to Bissingen along the Enz. Its length gives you a specific point of reference for planning your day, while the information boards provide a historical focus along the way.

The bwegt hiking trail has a different focus: it connects the old towns of Bietigheim and Besigheim, follows the Enz and crosses terraced vineyards on steep slopes in the Enz Valley. While the Rafting Trail explores the river’s past use and the timber trade, this hiking trail brings the landscape and vineyards into focus. Conditions can vary depending on the season. When choosing between the two routes, you can consider whether you prefer a historical themed trail or a route that combines the river and vineyard landscape.

Green spaces and active pursuits

The model teaching garden and the eco-hut with its green roof were created for the 1989 State Garden Show. The teaching garden offers a different focus from the historic buildings and riverside routes; the eco-hut complements it with its planted roof. Both features can be understood as part of the garden show’s history, without equating them with the town’s older buildings.

The indoor pool at the viaduct has an outdoor brine pool heated to 30°C. As information about facilities can change, it is a good idea to check the pool’s latest information before visiting. This lets you plan a visit to the pool as a separate activity, rather than treating it as a hike or a visit to a cultural venue.

The wider setting: the Ludwigsburg destination

In the wider Ludwigsburg destination, terraced vineyards on steep slopes along the Neckar and Enz shape the district’s landscape. Another way to explore the region by bike is the Metter Cycle Route, which is just under 29 kilometers long and runs between Sternenfels-Diefenbach and Bietigheim-Bissingen. It passes vineyards, orchards, stream landscapes and shady forests. Hilltop sofas and benches invite you to take a break and enjoy the views along the way. This route offers a longer, regional perspective on the landscape, while the local sights and the Rafting Trail have their own distinct focuses.

Choose accommodation to suit your travel plans

When looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. If you are mainly interested in architectural history and art, you can plan around Hornmoldhaus, the Old Enz Bridge, the gallery and Villa Visconti. For a more active stay, the routes described offer different themes: rafting and the timber trade on the Rafting Trail, vineyards and the Enz on the bwegt hiking trail, or a longer cycle route in the wider Ludwigsburg destination.
