Bietigheim: City History, Green Paths and Discoveries
Accommodation in Bietigheim
Bietigheim combines green spaces and cultural experiences with a historic town centre that has grown over centuries and is predominantly medieval in character. Half-timbered buildings, sculptures and historic structures offer different ways to explore the city’s history. There are also paths through green spaces, an art collection with a distinctive focus, and an escape room at the Hornmoldhaus City Museum. You can tailor your stay to your interests.
City History in Buildings
Bietigheim Town Hall was built as a half-timbered structure in 1507. The town church is also one of the city’s early landmarks: it was built as St Mary’s Church in 1401. The two buildings reveal different aspects of the historic town centre, from half-timbered architecture to ecclesiastical history.
The Lower Gate is the only surviving city gate in Bietigheim and dates from the late 14th century. The Powder Tower, a north-eastern corner tower of Bietigheim’s fortifications, dates to the 15th century. The fortifications themselves have been in place since 1364 and include a city wall and a continuous covered rampart walk. The gate, tower and wall bring different aspects of the city’s fortification history to life.
Another distinctive structure is the Bietigheim Viaduct, which opened in 1853 and has 21 arches. The arches give the viaduct a clear architectural structure. Along with the Lower Gate, the towers and the city wall, it adds a distinctive feature to Bietigheim’s architectural history.
At Hexenwegle, small bridge access points—which once led from the flood-safe Zwinger to the upper floors of the houses—connect different levels of the town’s former layout. Here, the focus is on a historic detail that differs from the city’s larger structures.
Discover Green Spaces and Paths
The tree trail runs for 3.3 kilometres from the railway station through the Wobach green corridor and the former horticultural exhibition grounds to Metteranlage. Along the route, 50 trees are marked with small information boards. The trail combines a clearly defined route with individual stops where you can learn about the trees along the way.
The BĂĽrgergarten is close to the old town of Bietigheim-Bissingen. It is divided into a perennial garden, a wetland area, a grass garden and a play area. The different sections give the garden a range of focal points, from the perennial and grass gardens to the wetland area.
The Mettertal QR-code trail also highlights an aspect of the landscape: one of its stops is devoted to the vineyards on MĂĽhlsteige. If you are interested in vineyards, this stop offers a specific point of interest along the trail.
Art and Experiences to Book
