Discover Ravenstein
Accommodation in Ravenstein
Ravenstein reveals itself through historical sites in its districts, cycling and hiking routes, as well as forests and recreation areas along streams. These different themes complement one another: Ballenberg preserves remains of a historic road, Merchingen is known for a Renaissance castle and the Grünkern tradition, while Oberwittstadt and Erlenbach offer further points of cultural and historical interest. When planning your trip, it helps to first consider whether you want to focus mainly on culture, active days or the landscape.
History and museums in the districts
Near Ravenstein’s district of Ballenberg, remains of a historic road have been preserved. It is associated with Charlemagne’s route from Würzburg to Switzerland. In Oberwittstadt, the altar in the Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers dates from 1456. This gives it a specific date, while the history of Merchingen is explored in a different way: it has a Renaissance castle with a local history museum.
Oberwittstadt also has a stone museum featuring a collection of stones built up over a long period. In Erlenbach, the local history room documents changes in agriculture during the 20th century. The range therefore extends from a precisely dated altar and a stone collection to the history of agriculture. The sculpture Sculpture for the Roadalso has a clearly specified location: it stands at the edge of Ravenstein on the road towards Oberkessach.
Cycling and hiking routes for different kinds of day
Ravenstein has well-developed cycling and hiking routes for leisure. The Ravenstein Cycling Loop connects Hüngheim, Oberwittstadt, Unterwittstadt, Ballenberg, Erlenbach and Merchingen. Most sections are family-friendly; the route between Oberwittstadt and Erlenbach is particularly highlighted. If you are travelling with children, this gives you a specific point of reference for planning your day, without suggesting that every section is the same.
The 77-kilometre Sculpture Cycle Route connects regional tourist destinations and is designed as an art and nature experience. At more than 100 kilometres, the Grünkern Cycle Route covers a larger area, linking the Odenwald, the Charming Tauber Valley, Hohenlohe and HeilbronnerLand. The different lengths help you compare the routes: the Ravenstein Cycling Loop connects districts, while the other two routes provide wider regional links. This gives you a choice between a loop that specifically names Ravenstein districts and longer routes connecting several regions.
Forests, streams and Grünkern
Ravenstein lies where the Kessach and Erlenbach, together with the Hasselbach, flow towards the Jagst. Deciduous and coniferous forests shape the landscape, and recreation areas lie along the banks of the Kessach, Erlenbach and Hasselbach. This means that, alongside the cultural attractions, forests and stream landscapes offer their own distinct focus for a visit.
The Grünkern tradition is also part of the area’s history. Merchingen and Ravenstein’s other districts were among the centres of Grünkern production. A rebuilt, operational Grünkern drying kiln stands in Merchingen next to the fire station and is occasionally used to dry Grünkern. The facility connects the area’s former production focus with occasional use today.
Getting here and choosing where to stay
Ravenstein is directly accessible via the A81 and the Osterburken exit, which is in the area of Merchingen. There is a rail connection in neighbouring Osterburken. Check current timetables for your specific trip. When choosing accommodation, you can be guided by your planned priorities: the historical sites in the districts, cycling, or forests and streams. This way, you can start your search with the experiences that matter for your trip rather than with a type of accommodation that may not suit your needs.
Another look at the Neckar-Odenwald district
In the wider destination of the Neckar-Odenwald district, a roughly 3.8-kilometre accessible circular trail in Elztal runs through the Trienzbach valley and past a Kneipp facility. Opened on 18 March 2026, the trail is suitable for wheelchair users, people with rollators and families with pushchairs. It offers another clearly located perspective on what the Neckar-Odenwald district has to offer.
