Hohberg combines insights into Baden beekeeping with viticulture and trails through nature, vineyards and village scenery. Its attractions range from a bee museum with around 600 exhibits to wine tastings by appointment and a marked route linking all three districts. When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up whether culture, wine or outdoor activities should be the focus of your trip.

Bees, wine and history

Hohberg’s Bee Museum explores the past and present of beekeeping in Baden. Around 600 exhibits bring both perspectives to life. Beekeeping in Hohberg is considered a tradition dating back more than 600 years. Anyone interested in the craft will find a historical connection to the area as well as the exhibition.

The museum offers informative educational tours that are particularly suitable for school groups. Another historical trail leads to Hohberg-Niederschopfheim: the area is considered to have been the site of a Roman road station on the former route from Augst to Mainz. Beekeeping and Roman history offer different points of interest if you’d like to explore Hohberg’s cultural heritage.

Viticulture here includes vineyards on loess soils and steep south-facing slopes. Grape varieties grown in Hohberg include MĂĽller-Thurgau, Riesling and members of the Pinot family. The museum at the Roeder von Diersburg winery is devoted to the history of viticulture and the history of the majorat estate. The family offers wine tastings there by prior arrangement.

Trails and outdoor discoveries

The marked “From Church Tower to Church Tower” circular trail links Hohberg’s three districts over approximately 12 kilometres. It passes through nature, vineyards and village scenery. Its length and route provide a clear basis for planning: a single loop connects several districts and landscapes.

The Wunderfitz Discovery Trail in Diersburg offers a shorter option. This approximately 4-kilometre trail is designed for families with children. It is considerably shorter than the approximately 12-kilometre circular trail; the two also have different focuses: one is a discovery trail for families, while the other links all three districts. The tree and hedgerow nature trail offers another way to explore the plant life, featuring a range of native plants.

Its location is another point of reference when comparing Hohberg as a holiday destination with its wine, culture and nature attractions. You can choose accommodation to match the focus of your stay, without reducing the area’s varied attractions to a single type of outing.

Hohberg within the wider Ortenaukreis destination

The wider Ortenaukreis destination encompasses the landscape between the Rhine and the Black Forest. It has 23 nature reserves covering a total of around 3,110 hectares, stretching from the Rhine plain to the higher elevations of the Black Forest. This broader natural setting complements Hohberg’s own trails and vineyards.

Other attractions in the Ortenaukreis include water-based activities and cultural experiences. Rulantica in Rust offers year-round aquatic fun for the whole family, with indoor and outdoor attractions as well as the Hyggedal relaxation and sauna area. Europa-Park is also located in the municipality of Rust. In Oberwolfach, MiMa showcases unique minerals from the Black Forest, collected by the Friends of Minerals and Mining Oberwolfach association (Verein der Freunde von Mineralien und Bergbau Oberwolfach e.
