Appenweier
Accommodation in Appenweier
Appenweier has several sides to discover: the Nesselried circular trails lead through the vineyards, mixed forests and orchards of a landscape at the foothills. There are also trails themed around local legends and forest knowledge, as well as historic buildings and Urloffen’s horseradish tradition.
Hiking, forests and stories
The Nesselried circular trails offer views towards the Vosges and the Rhine plain. The hiking trails can be used year-round and are also accessible with a stroller. If you enjoy following a thread of stories along the way, you’ll find one on the Nesselried Legends Trail: around nine legend signs introduce the local world of legends.
The children’s forest education trail has a different focus. It is just over a kilometer long and uses eight information boards to explain the forest and its inhabitants. The trail starts and ends at the forest parking lot, where there is a large playground. The main difference between the two trails is their subject matter: one focuses on local legends, the other on the forest and its inhabitants.
Leisure activities with different focuses
The area around Max-Jordan-See is used for relaxation, socializing and sports. Urloffen Golf Club has 27 holes: an 18-hole championship course and a 9-hole public course. The two course formats offer golf at different scales.
Championship rounds for the BW Cup and state championships are held at Ortenauring. Karting is also available there, with your own kart or a rental kart. If you’d like to plan your trip around a race date, check the specific event dates in advance.
Horseradish and local history
Horseradish cultivation began in Urloffen at the start of the 20th century. Trade in the root made the town well known throughout Baden; three businesses in Urloffen process horseradish. This specialty is also featured in local cuisine: Gaukels Meerrettichstube serves horseradish dishes year-round, as well as seasonal dishes.
The buildings add further chapters to the town’s history. In Zimmern, the pilgrimage church is considered the oldest religious building in the municipality of Appenweier. Rathaus I in Appenweier is a former Baroque courthouse; the parish church there is considered a Rococo gem.
The cultural program includes ARTappenweier, a local cabaret and comedy program featuring performers from Germany, the German-speaking world, Italy, the United States and television. Three ARTappenweier events are planned each year in Appenweier.
When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether nature trails and forest knowledge, the horseradish tradition, or local history and cabaret should shape your stay. These different themes offer practical guidance for planning your own trip without limiting it to just one type of outing.
