Egesheim lies on the GroĂźer Heuberg in the southwest of the Swabian Alb. Here, a 9 km circular trail, destinations high above the town and a tradition tied to Easter Monday come together. The town can be explored through its landscape, architectural history and a custom with a set date in the annual calendar.

Circular trail and notable local sights

The Anniversary Trail is a 9 km circular route around Egesheim. Its length gives you a clear measure for planning if you want to explore the town on a continuous hike. Heidentor lies northwest of Egesheim, above the town on the Oberburg ridge. This gives you both a defined loop and a precisely located destination as different ways to experience the area.

Chapel history and Easter custom

The Loreto Chapel adds a specific architectural history to the landscape: in 1743/44, the former St. Ottilia Chapel was demolished and rebuilt high above Egesheim at its present location as the Loreto Chapel. St. Ottilia Chapel and Loreto Chapel therefore refer to different chapters in the history of the building.

The Egesheim egg-rolling custom is also firmly rooted in the annual calendar. It takes place on Easter Monday morning. It was first mentioned in 1832 and is carried out each year by the year’s conscripts—the community’s twenty-year-olds. If the custom is a reason for your trip, plan around Easter Monday morning. The date and the specified age group give this local tradition a clear framework.

The wider landscape: Tuttlingen

The wider travel destination of Tuttlingen opens up a broader geographical setting. Tuttlingen district covers 734.4 square kilometers and includes the southwestern foothills of the Swabian Alb, parts of the Baar region and the valley of the Young Danube. In the northern part of the district are juniper heaths and the “10-Tausender” region, with ten mountains over 1,000 meters high. Picturesque white limestone cliffs rise in the Danube Valley; the Danube Gorge and the Höwenegg volcanic crater are among the district’s scenic highlights.

The Danube Sinkhole between Immendingen, Möhringen, Tuttlingen and Fridingen is a changeable natural phenomenon. It can look different from day to day: at times the Danube carries a lot of water here, at other points it dries up completely, or it carries only a little water. When planning your visit, allow for these changing water levels rather than assuming the scenery will always look the same.

Activities across the district

The district of Tuttlingen also offers activities with different levels of commitment. At Rabenfels in the Bära Valley, the climbing areas between the “Mister Wendl” and “Gebrüderweg” routes are open from 1 August to 31 December. Check the current regulations before visiting. The “Rock & Roll Tour” in Tuttlingen-Nendingen is a two-kilometer walking and hiking route that is largely barrier-free and fully wheelchair-accessible. Compared with the 9 km Anniversary Trail in Egesheim, it is a shorter-distance option with explicitly stated accessibility features. Check local conditions before setting out as well.
