Wehingen: Churches, Chapels and the Heuberg Landscape
Accommodation in Wehingen
Wehingen lies on the Großer Heuberg, in the valleys of the Bära and Mühlbach rivers. The highest elevations of the Swabian Alb surround the town; they belong to the so-called Region of the 10 Thousanders. Wehingen thus brings together a striking landscape and a rich local church history with opportunities for exercise and shared leisure activities.
Chapels and Churches in Wehingen
One of the town’s landmarks is the Bürgle Chapel, set on a hill. Footpaths lead up from various directions. The chapel is often visited by pilgrims and worshippers and offers a peaceful place for prayer. It is accompanied by a Way of the Cross with 14 stations, traditionally walked every Good Friday. Below the chapel is a Lourdes grotto built in 1890. Devotions are held there in May, the month of Mary.
The Fronhofen Church also connects Wehingen’s local history with a long ecclesiastical tradition. It stands at the edge of town in the direction of Harras and was first mentioned in documents in 1245 as the Church of the Holy Trinity. For a long time, it served as the parish and mother church for surrounding communities. The Fronhofen Church in Wehingen cemetery was once the mother church of many communities in the Heuberg and is considered a historical monument as well as an art-historical record of earlier eras.
St. Ulrich Parish Church stands in the town center and is the spiritual center of the Catholic parish. It was first mentioned in documents in 1299 and can accommodate around 500 visitors. Its 35-meter-high tower is among the tallest structures in Wehingen. The Bürgle Chapel, Fronhofen Church and St. Ulrich thus represent different chapters in the town’s history: from its early documentary records to places of prayer and today’s parish community.
Leisure and Exercise
Wehingen has a total of seven public playgrounds for children and young people. The Sauerwasen recreation area complements these with a pump track, a small sports field and a skate park. Those looking to spend their time actively will find a variety of options: playgrounds around town and several specific activities at Sauerwasen.
One hiking option is the Hochberg circular trail near Wehingen. The route is about 5.4 kilometers long and starts and ends at the Bürgle parking lot. Along the way, it passes, among other places, Hintere Uchten, Holzeck, Blaidhalde, Rossreute, Weilerhang, Hochberghütte, Schänzle and Hochberg Ost. The route makes for a clearly defined loop; check the current trail conditions before setting out.
In the wider region, the signposted Route of the 10 Thousanders runs through the area around Wehingen, Deilingen, Gosheim and Denkingen. It connects ten mountains in the Swabian Alb that are over 1,000 meters high: Lemberg, Hochberg, Oberhohenberg, WandbĂĽhl, Montschenloch, Bol, Rainen, Hummelsberg, Hochwald and Kehlen. The route is considered a nature experience for hikers. Since signs and trail conditions are important for navigation, it is a good idea to check the latest information before setting out.
There is also a resource for planning cycling trips: Wehingen’s cycling information page offers an interactive Donaubikeland map for exploring Wehingen and its surroundings by bicycle. It also points to 16 cycling tours in the Donaubergland region. This is a different way to explore the area from the two hiking routes: the map supports bicycle navigation, while the Hochberg circular trail describes a specific loop with a stated distance and start and end point.
