Dogern combines views of the High Rhine landscape with trails for walks and hikes, as well as a rich local history. From Bürgelrain, the view stretches across Dogern and the High Rhine landscape; St. Clemens Parish Church offers tangible insights into the town's history and art. The church consecration festival is also a recurring part of the local calendar.

Views and Trails Around Dogern

Bürgelrain is Dogern's local hill and is also called “Kreuzberg” (Cross Mountain) because of the cross on its summit. From there, you can enjoy sweeping views across Dogern and the High Rhine landscape. The hill can also be reached via the Liederbach Valley; after descending, the Trottenweg leads back to Dogern north of the railway line. If you are considering this route for an outing, take local trail conditions into account.

Beyond Bürgelrain, many smaller hiking and walking trails invite you to explore Dogern and the surrounding area, the adjacent Southern Black Forest, and neighboring Switzerland. You can focus on trails in the local area or include nearby landscapes and Switzerland in your plans. An 800-meter section of cycle path between Dogern and the Dogern-Schnöt industrial area extends the existing section of cycle path between Hauenstein and the Waldshut customs post in Dogern. It was completed in December 2023. Check local conditions before using it.

Church, Festival and History

St. Clemens Parish Church features depictions of Saint Clement and Saint Sebastian, as well as the disciples at Emmaus. On July 19, 1775, Auxiliary Bishop Baron von Hornstein of Constance consecrated the church. The ceiling paintings depict the martyrdoms of Saint Clement and Saint Sebastian; Jesus with the disciples at Emmaus is shown on the ceiling of the sanctuary. Further paintings by Gotthard Hilzinger can be found on the high altar and the two side altars. The subjects are thus spread across the ceiling, sanctuary and altars, offering a tangible impression of the church's artistic themes.

The church consecration festival is a recurring part of the local calendar: in Dogern, it is always celebrated on a Sunday around July 19. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the specific event date.

The history of the town twinning between Dogern and Le Grand-Lemps can also be traced through various early initiatives. Activities that laid the foundation for the partnership included learning each other's languages, private contacts and bicycle tours from Dogern to Le Grand-Lemps. Language learning, personal contacts and shared outings were thus different elements of this early connection.

Getting Your Bearings in Dogern

When looking for accommodation, you can weigh up rail access alongside your interests in landscapes, trails and local history. Dogern brings these different themes together, without requiring you to base your travel plans on just one of them.
