Wiesen combines cultural history with routes through woodland, lakeside and moorland landscapes. The restored Mainz Hunting Lodge in Wiesen acquired its present Renaissance appearance in 1597. From there, the approximately 9 km-long “Wirtschaftsstandort Wiesen” cultural trail descends into the Aubach Valley Nature Reserve. This is how discovering the village begins with a historic building and leads at the same time into a very different setting.

The castle, church and local history

St. James’ Church makes its own architectural statement. Its features include stucco ornamentation on the ceiling, ceiling paintings, Baroque altars, a baptismal font and pulpit, as well as various paintings, statues of saints and an organ gallery. Together with the hunting lodge’s Renaissance appearance, these offer a varied cultural perspective on Wiesen.

The history of the private brewery is also part of the village’s character: founded in 1888 as a civic brewery, it is still in operation and is the only private brewery in the district of Aschaffenburg. This means the village’s history extends beyond buildings and art to include a business with a long local tradition.

Woodland, lake and moor

The cultural trail passes through the forest, by the Wiesener Kreuz, and on to a viewpoint at the edge of the woods. In the Aubach Valley Nature Reserve lies an excavated glassworks dating from the 18th century. The route thus connects the descent from the castle into the valley with a viewpoint and an archaeological site.

The Wiesen circular trail follows a different route: from the Alte Dreschhalle, it takes a forest path to WiesbĂĽttsee, goes around the lake and along WiesbĂĽtt Moor, then returns to the starting point via the Panorama Trail above Wiesen. WiesbĂĽtt Moor is in neighbouring Hesse, about 3 km from Wiesen, and is the only raised bog in the Spessart. Those who want to focus on both the lake and the moor will find a different kind of route here than on the cultural trail through the Aubach Valley.

Cycling in Wiesen and the wider destination

The 65 km Wiesbüttsee–Dammbach cycling tour begins at Wiesbüttsee on the Bavarian–Hessian border. It first passes through the forest above Wiesen, then descends into the village centre. Some sections follow Bikewald Route A, marked in black. Check current trail conditions and local signs before setting out.

The wider Aschaffenburg destination offers further regional cycling options. The Main Cycle Route is designated family-friendly, runs through the Main Valley in the district of Aschaffenburg, and is well signposted. The also signposted Kahltal–Spessart Cycle Route passes through the district’s appealing landscapes. In the eastern High Spessart, four challenging cross-country trails are signposted as Bikewald-Spessart routes.

The wider Aschaffenburg destination also offers a variety of hiking options. Spessart Trails 1, 2 and 3 pass through the district and have been awarded the “Quality Trail Hikable Germany” certification by the German Hiking Association four times. The Eselsweg is a multi-day tour in the district; there are also more than 30 hiking tours on the cultural trails of the Archaeological Spessart Project. The “Denk mal – Rad mal” app offers cycling adventures in nature around the district, with stories, quizzes and information about attractions. Check the app and its content for availability before travelling.

The regional character of Aschaffenburg also includes Franconian specialities and Äppelwoi from local cider presses, served in numerous inns and hotels throughout the district. This culinary selection complements the overview of cycling and hiking options in the wider region.
