Ramsthal combines Franconian winegrowing traditions with distinctive traces of local history and experiences in the landscape. At terroir f, red steles explain the history of grape varieties and the traditional three-pole training system used in Franconian viticulture. There is also a nature trail, an art trail and opportunities for cycling. Depending on what interests you on your trip, you can focus on wine, culture or outdoor activities.

Wine and Regional Culture

At the terroir f site, the distinctive red steles give the history of winegrowing a tangible connection to the place: they cover both grape varieties and the traditional three-pole training system. Visitors can taste wine at a vinotheque and discover its variety of aromas. The winemakers’ vinotheques and tasting rooms also offer opportunities throughout the year to get to know their wines. If you plan to attend a tasting, check the available options and opening hours in advance.

Ramsthal also hosts wine festivals and wine service at the terroir f site. If you plan to attend a particular wine festival, check the dates in advance. This lets you include the wine offerings in your travel plans without assuming that an event will take place on a particular date.

Traces of Local History

The Ramsthal bakehouse was built in 1856. A livestock scale and a fire brigade equipment shed are attached to the building. In 2025, the bakehouse underwent exterior renovation, which included a new oak bench, a new sign and new plantings in the outdoor area. These details tell the story of a historic building and its more recent changes.

St. Vitus Church also offers clues for exploring the past. The lower part of its Romanesque tower dates from between 1000 and 1250; the base of the present-day church tower is dated to the 12th or 13th century. The church is first mentioned in written records in the 15th century. These dates refer to different historical evidence: parts of the tower and the first written mention of the church.

Nature Trail, Views and Art Trail

The nature trail leads from the chapel past the forest kindergarten to Knückelein, the highest point in the Ramsthal area. From there, the 360-degree view stretches to the Rhön, the Haßberge, the Steigerwald and the Spessart. The route thus connects a named viewpoint with sweeping views across several landscapes.

The festival grounds are the starting and ending point of the nature trail. There is parking there, along with a wine and sausage vending machine where hikers can pick up provisions for the route. As practical details like these may change, it is best to check local information before you arrive.

The art trail offers a different way to discover Ramsthal: the 2.6-kilometre circular route passes five sculptures. They were created during the 1st Ramsthal Sculptors’ Symposium, held as part of Art Week 2019. While the nature trail leads to Knückelein and its panoramic views, the art trail focuses on sculptures along a set circular route. The two trails therefore appeal to different interests.

Cycling

Ramsthal is connected to the regional cycle network and can be a destination or a stop on cycling tours through the Rhön. The town’s hills and valleys also offer mountain biking opportunities. When planning, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between visiting Ramsthal as a destination or stop on a cycling tour and exploring the local mountain biking options.

If wine tasting and local history are your main interests, your stay will have a different focus than a trip planned around the nature trail, art trail and cycling. If you are travelling together, you can compare these different interests as you plan and tailor your search for accommodation in Ramsthal accordingly.
