Baunach combines a lake created by gravel extraction with aspects of its town history. South Lake showcases a landscape of the kind created by gravel extraction in many parts of the Main Valley; the lake is fed by groundwater. Nature experiences and historical discoveries offer different focal points for planning your trip.

South Lake and the nature trail

The nature trail at South Lake follows a circular route along the lake. Its 14 stations present features of the natural and cultural landscape, as well as distinctive aspects of the Main Valley. For families, the approximately 2 km route takes a little over an hour. This makes it easy to estimate how much time to allow, while the stations draw attention both to nature and to the landscape shaped by people. The trail is impassable during high water; take this restriction into account when planning your day.

From the jetty, Baunach weir is on the left, with Schrepfersmühle, also known as Tremelsmühle, behind it. This gives the view of the lake a specific local context: from here, you can see how the weir and mill are situated in relation to each other.

Hear and see Baunach’s history

For adults, the audio guide tour for history enthusiasts offers around an hour of spoken information at 13 stations in Baunach town centre. This is a different way to explore the area than the South Lake circular trail: here, the focus is on historical topics, while the trail features the natural and cultural landscape. Tours of the historic old town can also be arranged with the “Baunach night watchman,” alias Reinhold Schweda. Check directly with the night watchman about current availability.

The former town hall was built in 1744 and designed by J. H. Dientzenhofer. The exhibition included artefacts from more than 1,000 years of town history, as well as tools from various crafts and from agriculture. Other exhibition topics included rural life, craft occupations, the Christmas tradition of “Möppala,” and works by Baunach artists.

Seasonal treats

At the Baunach Christmas market, regional bratwurst and mulled wine from a winery in Lower Franconia are on offer. Individual stalls and products may vary. Seasonal offerings are also part of the town’s appeal, though they are distinct from the year-round topics covered at the lake and in town.

More to explore in the wider Bamberg destination

The wider Bamberg destination offers its own cultural and nature experiences. Weissenstein Castle near Pommersfelden is one of Germany’s major Baroque complexes. Its extensive gallery features art-historically significant works by French, Italian, German and Dutch painters. In the 18th century, the Ebrach Abbey complex was extensively remodelled by Leonhard Dientzenhofer into a palace-like Baroque complex; its Gothic church and rose window were preserved. Since 2004, the Museum of Ebrach History has been housed in the former Cistercian monastery and focuses on the history of the market town and the monastery.

The Levi Strauss Museum – Buttenheim Birthplace also tells the life story of Levi Strauss and the history of his famous blue trousers. Seven culinary tours offer a taste of the Bamberg region: three cycling tours and four walking routes lead to floodplain landscapes, viewpoints, places to stop for refreshments and regional producers. The tour selection may be updated; check the route information if it is important for your plans.
