As a pilgrimage site, Burgwindheim is nestled in the natural landscape of the Central Steigerwald. One way to explore the town is the Burgwindheim Cultural-Historical Trail: this pleasant walking route follows paved paths around Burgwindheim, is about 1.5 kilometres long and takes approximately one hour.

A trail with stops

An overview map shows the trail’s stops. At the end of each stop, the accompanying texts are available as audio files. The map, texts and audio versions therefore offer different ways to explore the trail: they provide a sense of direction, explain the topics at each stop and make the texts available to listen to as well. At selected stops, children can try riddles set by the clever Knight of Windheim. These riddles are included at certain points along the trail and can be planned as individual activities along the way.

The approximate duration helps you plan the walk as a separate activity alongside other plans. The trail is not a long hike: its stated length and walking time offer a practical guide for planning your day, without prescribing a particular pace.

Chapel and landscape

Another point of cultural and historical interest in Burgwindheim is the late Gothic Holy Blood Chapel. It was built around 1597. The trail and the chapel offer two different ways to explore the town: a walk with stops, and a named historic building with an approximate date. You can get to know the town through both the trail and the history of its architecture.

Together with its setting as a pilgrimage site amid the natural landscape of the Central Steigerwald, Burgwindheim offers several perspectives: a walk along paved paths, stops with texts and audio, and a late Gothic building. For families, the riddles at selected stops offer an additional activity; they are not available along the entire trail.

More topics in the wider Bamberg destination

The wider Bamberg destination offers additional cultural and nature-related experiences. Weissenstein Palace near Pommersfelden is one of Germany’s major Baroque complexes and houses an extensive gallery of art-historically significant works by French, Italian, German and Dutch painters. Ebrach offers a different architectural perspective: in the 18th century, Leonhard Dientzenhofer comprehensively remodelled the monastery complex as a palace-like Baroque complex; the Gothic church and its rose window were preserved. Since 2004, the former Cistercian monastery has housed the Museum of the History of Ebrach. It covers both the history of the market town and that of the monastery.

Nature and outdoor activities are also among the themes of the wider Bamberg destination. The Methusalem Trail around Ebrach leads through the Spitzenberg nature reserve to trees that are up to 250 years old or older and up to 144 centimetres thick. The Eulenwand near Tiefenellern is one of the climbing areas listed in the Bamberg region. These destinations cater to different interests: art and painting at the palace, monastic history in Ebrach, ancient trees along the Methusalem Trail, and a climbing area near Tiefenellern.
