Pettstadt: Church Art, Wayside Shrines and Festivals
Accommodation in Pettstadt
Pettstadt’s history is reflected in the parish church of the Nativity of Mary, in religious artworks at various locations around town, and in festivals held on recurring dates. This offers different ways to plan your trip: you can explore ecclesiastical architecture and art history or time your stay to coincide with a festival.
Church History and Art in Pettstadt
The parish of Pettstadt was established in 1399 and placed under the authority of the Bamberg cathedral chapter as its fief holder. Construction of the present Baroque parish church began in 1754; the building was completed in 1756 and consecrated on August 17, 1777. These dates record the start of construction, completion and consecration as distinct milestones in the church’s history.
The furnishings also bring together different periods. The parish church of the Nativity of Mary contains a Late Gothic sacrament house dating from 1494, bearing the coats of arms of two members of the Bamberg cathedral chapter. The high altar was created in 1769 by Johann Bernhard Kamm as a freestanding architectural structure. Frescoes from the period’s style are preserved in the tower chapel, including Christ in the mandorla, Mary, John the Baptist and other saints. The sacrament house and the altar thus set two dates far apart within the same church side by side.
Religious Artworks and Historical Local Connections
The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of Bohemia, stands just before the Ebrach Bridge in Pettstadt. It was erected on May 16, 1872. A different depiction can be found in the front garden of the Kraus property at Kaulberg 2: the sandstone sculpture shows Jesus resting beside the cross.
The Baroque niche wayside shrine known as Lieb Herrchela dates from 1727. Two lime trees frame it on the old connecting route to Erlach, near the cemetery. The Franzosenmarter wayside shrine stands near the bridge over the Rauhe Ebrach and probably dates from the early 16th century. The Lower Cross is located in the woods on the Mainberg, at a fork in the road at the end of Erlacher Straße. The names of the holders of Pettstadt’s ferry rights can also be traced back to 1461. Together, these local features and dates offer insight into different aspects of local history, from religious imagery to records of ferry rights.
Festivals in Different Seasons
The events calendar offers recurring occasions throughout the year: Pettstadt’s Rose Festival takes place on the fourth weekend in June, and Pettstadt Street Festival on the third weekend in July. Pettstadt Christmas Market is scheduled for the third weekend of Advent. The two summer festivals therefore fall in different months, while the Christmas market provides a seasonal event during Advent. Exact dates may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular festival, check the date for the relevant year in advance.
More Highlights in the Wider Bamberg Destination
Other places in the wider Bamberg destination add to the picture of history and architecture. Weissenstein Palace near Pommersfelden is one of Germany’s major Baroque complexes and houses an extensive gallery featuring works of art-historical importance by French, Italian, German and Dutch painters. In the 18th century, Leonhard Dientzenhofer carried out a fundamental transformation of Ebrach Abbey into a palace-like Baroque complex; its Gothic church, with its rose window, was preserved.
The Methusalem Tour around Ebrach offers a different focus, leading through the Spitzenberg nature reserve. It takes visitors to trees up to 250 years old or older and up to 144 centimetres thick. The wider Bamberg destination therefore offers nature experiences alongside architecture and art history as themes in their own right.
If you include the wider Bamberg destination, the history of its palaces and abbeys or the nature around Ebrach may be deciding factors. Choose your accommodation search based on the themes that interest you most during your trip.
