Discover Creußen: Ceramics, Crafts and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Creußen
Creußen brings together the history of ceramic craftsmanship, local walking tours and hiking trails. At the Krügemuseum, Creußen stoneware takes centre stage; outdoors, trails lead through the cultural landscape and to historic sites. There are also guided tours by prior arrangement and the International Pottery Market. This gives you the choice, when planning your trip, between focusing on craftsmanship and local history or taking longer routes.
Creußen Stoneware and Pottery Tradition
The Krügemuseum in Creußen offers a comprehensive overview of stoneware production by Creußen master potters in the 17th and 18th centuries. On display are everyday vessels thrown on the potter’s wheel, such as jugs, pots, bowls and tankards. There are also Apostles, planets, hunting and heraldic tankards. The collection thus combines everyday vessel forms with various named types of tankard, bringing the local history of ceramics to life.
The International Pottery Market also celebrates Creußen’s ceramic craftsmanship tradition. The production of Creußen stoneware reached its peak in the 17th and 18th centuries. The market takes place every year on the second Sunday in July. As it is held on a specific date, check the current event listing before your trip.
Circular Routes and Longer Hikes
The “Oberes Rotmaintal” nature trail is a circular hiking route. It passes through the former village of Bühl, which has been a district of Creußen since it was incorporated in 1972, goes past Bühler Castle and descends into the Rotmain Valley. Along the trail, 17 stations explain the cultural landscape. The route thus combines landscape and local history: Bühl, the castle and the valley are points along the way, while the information panels add context to the cultural landscape. Check the trail markers locally before setting out.
The fifth stage of the Upper Franconian Way of St James from Hof to Nuremberg is a different proposition: it starts in Creußen and ends in Pegnitz after just over 35 kilometres. This distance refers to the entire stage. If you are planning a hike of this length, you can distinguish it from the circular route in the Upper Rotmain Valley without confusing the two options.
In the wider region, the Bierquellen hiking trail runs through the Franconian Switzerland/Veldenstein Forest Nature Park between Pegnitz, Creußen and Hummeltal. It is around 18 kilometres long. Taken together, these options offer different scales for planning: a local circular route with 17 stations, a Way of St James stage of just over 35 kilometres, and a trail of around 18 kilometres in the wider area.
Guided Tours and Special Places
A guided tour along the Craftsmen’s Circular Trail, with explanations of coats of arms and craftsmen’s marks, can be booked by prior arrangement. The children’s town tour “Experience the Middle Ages” is also available by prior arrangement. Both offer a reason to plan your visit in advance; prior arrangement is required for each.
The Hermit’s Cottage is a special historic site. It is privately owned and can only be visited by prior arrangement through the town of Creußen. It is also considered Germany’s only surviving burgher hermitage. If you would like to include a visit, remember that you need to register in advance.
The Wider Bayreuth Region
In the wider Bayreuth travel region, the district is shaped by contrasting landscapes: Franconian Switzerland defines the western and southern parts, while the Fichtelgebirge, with its dark forests and granite boulder fields, characterises the north. The district also has a well-maintained network of around 1,400 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, hiking paths and cycling routes. These details provide a broader perspective for planning your trip beyond the local attractions in Creußen.
This helps you find options that suit the kind of stay you have in mind.
