Bayreuth: Garden Art, Caves and Nature
Accommodation in Bayreuth
The Bayreuth district offers a variety of landscapes: in the west and south, Franconian Switzerland shapes the region with its varied, gentle scenery; in the north, dark forests and granite boulder fields in the Fichtelgebirge define its character. The area also has its own distinctive highlights, including garden art, caves, museums and trails. When planning your trip, you can start by asking yourself whether you mainly want to experience culture, observe nature, get active or enjoy Franconian cuisine.
Garden Art and Regional History
The Garden Art Museum at Schloss Fantaisie opened in July 2000 as the first German museum at the time devoted exclusively to the history of garden art. Schloss Fantaisie park combines design elements from the Rococo, Sensibility and Historicism periods. Schloss Fantaisie therefore offers two distinct ways to explore the subject: the museum focuses on the history of garden art, while the park showcases different design periods.
Other museums have their own distinctive focus. The Franconian Switzerland Museum in TĂĽchersfeld is housed in the so-called Judenhof, a complex of buildings dating from the 18th century. The German Camera Museum in Plech has more than 15,000 exhibits. In practical terms, this means that a cultural itinerary can range from garden art and regional history to an extensive camera collection.
Caves and Activities at the Ochsenkopf
The caves offer distinctly different ways to visit. The Devil’s Cave can only be visited as part of a guided tour. At “Sophie at Night,” by contrast, you can explore the three chambers of Sophienhöhle at your own pace without joining a group tour; lighting effects and music accompany the experience. These different formats can help you decide which kind of cave experience better suits your plans.
In winter, four groomed downhill ski runs are available at the Ochsenkopf, including a 1,900-metre-long south-facing run. Some runs have snowmaking facilities and floodlighting until 10 p.m. Other options at the Ochsenkopf include well-marked hiking trails, the all-weather “Alpine Coaster” toboggan run, a mountain cart track, the North and South gondola lifts, and downhill and single-track trails. There are a variety of ways to spend active days here; which ones you choose will also depend on whether you prefer hiking trails, ski runs or other routes.
Landscapes, Trails and Nature Watching
The district has a well-maintained network of around 1,400 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, hiking trails and cycle paths. A wide selection of long-distance and themed routes opens up the district to cyclists, passing through different natural landscapes and taking in their distinctive features and tourist highlights. Local circular cycle routes add to the network and make it possible to plan shorter routes within specific areas. Depending on how you want to plan your ride, you can choose between longer themed routes and local circular routes.
In the Veldenstein Forest, there is a wildlife enclosure covering around 40 hectares, with easy-to-walk trails. Here, you can observe native forest animals in their natural surroundings. This offers a different focus from a cycling tour or an active day at the Ochsenkopf: the emphasis here is on watching animals in the forest.
Franconian Cuisine and the Right Accommodation
The region’s food culture includes numerous beer gardens, most of which are associated with their own breweries, butcher shops or bakeries. Traditional inns serve Franconian dining-room fare and regional specialities. When looking for accommodation, your travel interests can help guide you to the right base: would you like to explore museums and garden art, visit caves, spend time on the trails or discover Franconian cuisine? The region’s highlights give you concrete starting points for planning.
