Tapfheim brings together river landscapes, nature watching and traces of history. The Danube shapes the municipality, while the north and south surprise with contrasting landscapes. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering whether you would like to focus on nature by the river or on the history of the villages.

The Danube, rolling hills and the Kessel Valley

The Danube is a central feature of the municipality’s landscape. Tapfheim, Donaumünster and Erlingshofen lie along it. In the north, gentle hills and the appealing Kessel Valley shape the landscape; in the south, the flat surroundings of the Danube and the gravel pits define the scenery. This contrast gives Tapfheim a distinct landscape: you can plan your stay around the river or turn your attention to the northern valley.

Birdwatching and historic traces

On the north bank of the Danube, by the Donaumünster Bridge, stands a birdwatching tower belonging to the “Experience Nature in the Swabian Danube Valley” project. From the tower and along the route, you can observe typical water and floodplain-forest birds. Information stations explain bird migration and the best times for observation. The “Birdsong” and “Floodplain Forest” stations explore birdsong, the floodplain forest and its characteristic trees, as well as the flora and fauna of the Danube floodplains. The site thus combines birdwatching with information about birds’ habitats.

In Brachstadt, by the church, stands the ancient Roman tombstone, a Roman funerary monument. It received official recognition at a later date, and its location was given better protection from weathering. Historic boundary stones can be found in Brachstadt and DonaumĂĽnster. One is dated 1768 and marks the former boundary between the County of Oettingen to the north and the Principality of Palatinate-Neuburg. Some of the boundary stones may have been taken from the Rennweg, a former boundary path in the municipality. These stones therefore offer both a recorded date and a former boundary line, as well as a provenance that is explicitly described as possible.

More topics in the wider Donau-Ries destination

Beyond Tapfheim, the Donau-Ries region offers other distinct topics to explore. The district describes the Ries Geopark, with its crater formed by a meteorite impact, as a tourist attraction. The KĂĽhstein Geopark trail uses eight information boards to explain the processes involved in the impact 14.5 million years ago. From Buchberg, you can enjoy a panorama of the Ries and its inner and outer crater rims. Geology and views of the landscape are the focus here.

Nördlingen’s medieval town wall is completely preserved and can be walked along in its entirety. The town museum explores the lives and beliefs of people in Nördlingen, the changes brought by the Reformation, the Thirty Years’ War and the Battle of 1634. Its collection, which is more than 150 years old, spans four floors; a model made of around 6,000 tin figures illustrates the Battle of Nördlingen. In Nördlingen, local history and a vivid model of the battle complement the preserved town wall.

Another geological highlight of Donau-Ries is the Ries Crater Museum. It displays meteorites, fossils and a piece of real moon rock, along with information panels and multimedia exhibits. The exhibition explores the asteroid impact that created the Nördlinger Ries, its cosmic origins and its effects to this day. It is housed in a carefully restored medieval barn dating from 1503.

The pilgrimage Basilica of Maria BrĂĽnnlein offers yet another point of interest. The Rococo church was built between 1748 and 1782 to plans by Franz Joseph Roth, as the number of pilgrims grew. Its shrine altar is a fountain altar featuring the miraculous Virgin Mary by Johann Joseph Mayr, dating from 1755; Ernst Steinacker created the altar table with its fountain basin in 1953. In 1998, Pope John Paul II elevated the basilica to the rank of a Basilica minor. Around 150,000 pilgrims visit it each year.

You can consider which topics you would like your stay to focus on before looking for suitable accommodation in Tapfheim.
