More to explore in the wider Donau-Ries destination

Geology and the history of its towns are also highlights in the wider Donau-Ries destination. The district describes the Ries Geopark, with the Ries Crater formed by a meteorite impact, as a tourist attraction. The Ries Crater Museum displays meteorites, fossils and a piece of real moon rock, as well as information panels and multimedia exhibits. It explores the asteroid impact that created the Nördlinger Ries, its cosmic background and its effects to this day.

The Kühstein Geopark educational trail also focuses on the impact: eight information panels explain the processes that took place at the time. From Buchberg, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Ries and its inner and outer crater rims. These geological topics offer a different perspective from Marxheim’s riverside landscape and local history.

Nördlingen’s medieval town wall is fully intact and can be walked along in its entirety. The town museum covers, among other topics, the life and faith of the people of Nördlingen, the Reformation, the Thirty Years’ War and the 1634 battle. The collection spans four floors; a model made from around 6,000 tin figures depicts the Battle of Nördlingen. At Harburg Castle, a tour and its stops—including the Baroque castle church, loopholes, prison cells, gates and towers—bring almost 900 years of history to life.
