Isen is best explored via hiking trails that lead from the town center past streams, ponds and distinctive landmarks. Other highlights include St. Zeno Parish Church, St. Joseph’s Chapel with its Lourdes Grotto, and the small “Meindlvilla” leisure park. This mix offers different ways to shape your stay: you can focus on nature trails, include historic sites, or weigh up both as you plan your trip.

Hiking trails with different destinations

Hiking Trail 3 begins in Isen town center and follows a footbridge over the MĂĽhlbach past trout ponds, before returning to the Isen River. The stream, footbridge and ponds give the route a clear connection to water, while its starting point is right in the center of town. This combines a clearly identified starting point with several distinctive stops along the way.

Hiking Trail 4 also starts in the town center, but heads toward Dorfen. The route description mentions “Meindlvilla” leisure park, the Schinderbach and the brickworks; its destination is Eck. You can therefore choose between a trail that returns to the Isen River and a route whose destination is Eck. The different directions and named landmarks can help you choose the trail whose route better suits your travel plans.

A park and religious landmarks

The small “Meindlvilla” leisure park lies along Trail 4 and is set around an old villa. It has a Kneipp pool, a children’s playground, a table tennis table, a stick-shooting lane, a duck pond and benches. Its facilities bring together a range of features, from a playground and seating to a table tennis table and stick-shooting lane. Since Hiking Trail 4 explicitly passes the park, you can include it as a distinct stop when considering this route.

Hiking Trail 1 also passes notable religious sites. In the forest, at a junction with a paved road, stands a wayside shrine dedicated to Saint Sebastian; a shortcut toward Zieglstadl and Isen branches off here. The trail also passes St. Joseph’s Chapel with its Lourdes Grotto. The route description thus features both a wayside shrine at a trail junction and a chapel with a grotto. This gives Hiking Trail 1 a different focus from routes whose descriptions highlight streams, ponds or the leisure park.

St. Zeno Parish Church in Isen is one of the oldest churches in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. It was probably founded under Bishop Ermbert (739–747). Its age within the archdiocese and its probable foundation during this period offer two historical perspectives on the building. Together with St. Joseph’s Chapel and the Lourdes Grotto, sacred history becomes a distinct theme alongside the natural landmarks on the hiking trails.

A distinct cultural focus within the wider destination of Erding

If you are also considering the wider destination of Erding, the Erding Rural House Museum offers a different historical theme. The museum comprises 15 historic buildings relocated there from the district of Erding. It portrays historic rural economic and living practices in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

In Erding, the town tower tour complements the museum’s themes with architecture and views. The tour takes you up one of the city’s oldest buildings. After 163 steps, you reach a height of 35 meters, with views across Erding and the surrounding area as far as Munich. In föhn conditions, the view extends to the Alpine panorama. The museum and town tower therefore offer different ways to explore the history of the wider destination: rural life on the one hand, and a city building and its views on the other.

Another place of interest in Erding is the former home and studio of Franz Xaver Stahl. The Biedermeier house dates from around 1840 and is furnished with historic furniture; the former studio has remained unchanged since his death. It complements the museum’s rural history with a glimpse into a former home and workplace.

Choose the focus of your trip

The trails in Isen offer different named stops and destinations, while Erding’s museum, house and studio, and town tower tour each offer their own cultural themes.
