The Rococo church and an oak sculpture in front of the parish church give Buch a.Buchrain a tangible cultural anchor; at the same time, the wooded countryside invites you to go for walks. This is a place to explore through architecture, woodcarving and outdoor activities. When looking for accommodation, these different highlights can help you decide which interests to prioritize during your stay.

St. Martin and the wood art in front of the church

St. Martin in Buch am Buchrain combines a late Gothic core structure with distinctive Rococo design. In 1760, Johan Baptist Lethner substantially remodelled the church in the Rococo style. It is considered a characteristic example of a rural Rococo church that has been preserved as a coherent whole and is of great artistic and art-historical importance. The building is a hall church with a narrower choir closed on three sides. To the south stands the tower, with a tiered upper section and a moulded onion dome.

In front of the parish church stands the oak artwork “Over 1,200 Years of Buch.” The sculptor Florian Brunner created it at the initiative of the woodcarving symposium. The church and sculpture offer contrasting points of interest: one draws the eye to a building form that has evolved over centuries, the other to a work specially created from wood. The listed Hammersdorf granary is also a sight in the municipality of Buch a.Buchrain.

Walks, valley views and a cycling route

The wooded countryside in Buch a.Buchrain invites you to go for walks in every season. The B 2 circular hiking trail, “To Richinger Berg,” near Buch a.Buchrain is about six kilometres long. It follows the edge of the forest and offers views into the Kaltenbach Valley. Buch a.Buchrain also has the hiking trails B 2 “To Richinger Berg,” B 3 “Around Kaltenbach” and B 5 “To Müllnerbrünnel.”

Another destination for an outing is the fish ladder on the Hammerbach; the walk there is considered worthwhile. You can choose walks according to what you are looking for: B 2 combines an approximate distance with woodland and valley views, while the walk to the fish ladder leads to a named destination.

There is also a specific route for cyclists: the “Through the Erdinger Land” cycle route passes through Buch am Buchrain. It follows the Middle Isar Canal, the Sempt and the Schwillach, then continues through Buch. The route to Buch am Buchrain becomes somewhat more challenging because it crosses the Isen spring area. Check the current conditions on the cycle route before setting off. The options therefore differ not only by mode of transport but also by the features described: on B 2, the distance and views are the main attractions, while the cycle route is defined by its course and the more challenging section towards Buch.

Culture in Erding

In Erding, the Erdinger Bauernhausmuseum offers a distinct focus on cultural history. It comprises 15 historic buildings relocated there from the district of Erding and presents rural life and farming practices in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its subject matter thus extends from the buildings themselves to the ways of life and work they illustrate.

The town tower offers another perspective: a guided tour takes you up one of the oldest buildings in the city of Erding. After 163 steps, you reach a height of 35 metres. From there, the view extends across Erding and the surrounding area as far as Munich, and, on clear Föhn-wind days, to the Alpine panorama. For your travel plans, these different cultural themes sit side by side: in Buch a.Buchrain, St. Martin and the oak artwork shape a visit to the village; in Erding, the museum and town tower turn the focus to rural history and, respectively, the city’s history and its views.
