Accommodation in Steinkirchen
Steinkirchen combines a long church history with distinctive brick architecture. The elevated parish church of St. Laurentius served as the spiritual center for the surrounding villages for more than a millennium. If you are weighing culture against outdoor activities while planning your trip, you will find different themes: architectural history in the town and a shared walking and cycling path toward Taufkirchen.
Late Gothic churches in Steinkirchen
The Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius is an unplastered brick building dating from the end of the 15th century and has interior furnishings. The present building dates from the Late Gothic period, around 1470. It is unplastered and built in the Landshut style. Its layout is also precisely described: the nave comprises four bays, while the slightly recessed choir has two. It ends in three sides of an octagon—a distinctive geometric detail of the architecture.
The parish church’s furnishings include two late Baroque side altars. They were created around 1738 by Veit Madersbacher, a cabinetmaker from Erding. The history of the building and its furnishings thus extends from the late medieval church building to the Baroque period. The Chapel of the Souls in the cemetery in Steinkirchen adds another point in time: this unplastered brick building with a half-hipped roof dates from the early 16th century and also has interior furnishings.
Churches in the associated municipality
Other churches with distinctive architectural histories can also be found in the associated municipality, in places other than the Steinkirchen settlement. The Catholic branch church of St. Laurentius and St. Stephanus in Ebering is a small, unplastered brick building dating from around 1300. Its features include a late Gothic choir vault and interior furnishings.
In Kögning, the Catholic branch church of St. Michael has a late Gothic choir. The nave and tower date from 1733 and were the first work by Joh. Bapt. Lethner; this church also has interior furnishings. The examples from Ebering and Kögning belong to their respective locations and should not be confused with the churches in the Steinkirchen settlement.
Walking and cycling path toward Taufkirchen
As an active alternative to the church buildings, a shared walking and cycling path runs along district road ED 26 from Steinkirchen toward Taufkirchen. The central section between Eldering and Kögning was officially opened. If you are planning a continuous journey, check the route beforehand.
