Ammerndorf: Art Trails, Half-Timbered Houses and Brewing Tradition
Accommodation in Ammerndorf
Ammerndorf can be discovered along its paths, in its squares and at its historic buildings. The art and nature trail leads from the Bibert Valley Cycle Path into the countryside, while the cultural trail passes through the village centre and by the former railway station. There are also half-timbered houses around the market square, the Church of St Peter and Paul, and a long history of brewing and milling. In this way, outdoor activity and local culture offer different aspects of a stay.
Trails through the countryside and town
The Ammerndorf Art and Nature Trail is suitable for walkers, cyclists, families and school classes. It leads from the Bibert Valley Cycle Path into the countryside, and its routes are well signposted. Parking and connections to local public transport are available. If you are planning your journey in detail, check the latest timetable and parking information.
Several cycle routes also pass through Ammerndorf: the Paris–Prague Paneuropean Cycle Route, the Hohenzollern Cycle Route and the Bibert Valley Cycle Path. The threshing-machine house is halfway through Ammerndorf, right beside the cycle path. Three other themed trails branch off from there; the house is also the starting and finishing point for tours on the art and nature trail. It therefore serves as a landmark in the local trail network.
Numerous works of art and sculptures stand along the cycling section of the art and nature trail, which is about 2.5 kilometres long. The same themed trail also includes a 2.5-kilometre walk along the Reichenbach. Along the stream, you can discover a stretch of still water, a bird sanctuary and a wildflower meadow. The art along the cycle path and the nature by the stream give the trail its contrasting highlights.
The Ammerndorf Cultural Trail is one kilometre long. It passes the rectory, the Church of St Peter and Paul and the market square before continuing to the former railway station. The route thus takes in different aspects of the townscape, from the village centre to a former railway station.
Half-timbered houses and history in the town centre
Old half-timbered houses stand around the market square. The village church, with its onion dome visible from afar, is considered a landmark of the town. The Church of St Peter and Paul was remodelled in several stages during the 18th century: its tower was rebuilt in 1730, and its cupola was given a Baroque style in 1761. Those interested in architecture will find several layers of history in one place.
The threshing-machine house also tells the story of work in the town in earlier times. It once housed the cooperative threshing machine; today, it is the clubhouse of the Ammerndorf Local History and Horticultural Association. Its location beside the cycle path and its role as the starting and finishing point for tours also make it a reference point for routes through Ammerndorf.
Brewery, mill and local celebrations
Ammerndorf’s celebrations include an elderflower festival in spring and a wine festival in autumn. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the event dates in advance. A privately owned brewery has been based in Ammerndorf since 1730; for a long time, it was the only brewery of its kind in the district. Dorn-Bräu Brewery offers group tours by prior arrangement.
Opposite the private brewery, the brewery-owned inn invites you to stop for a meal in its shady beer garden. Check current opening arrangements before planning a visit. The historic Ammerndorf Mill dates back to 1607. A description from 2020 called it one of the region’s last still-operating grain mills. Various organic-quality flours are available at the mill; check before your visit whether the flour you want is in stock.
Which experiences should shape your stay?
The two trails offer different highlights: the art and nature trail combines outdoor activity with art and landscape, while the cultural trail turns the focus to buildings and local history. When looking for accommodation, you can consider which of these aspects you would like to shape your trip. Would you mainly like to explore by bike and on foot, or would you also like to include the town centre, history and places to eat?
