Cadolzburg combines a local history shaped by its castle with half-timbered houses, market square traditions and an exhibition in the inner castle. The castle complex stands on a rocky promontory above the town; Cadolzburg and the castle were residences of the burgraves of Nuremberg and the Hohenzollern margraves of Brandenburg. But a visit does not focus on the castle alone: the Margrave's Church, historic buildings and local markets each add their own distinctive touches. For families, the exhibition and a dedicated introductory family tour offer different ways to explore.

Discover the Castle Complex and Exhibition

Visitors can discover various aspects of life in a lordly castle across four floors of the Old Palace and throughout the inner castle. Original objects, elaborate reproductions, staged displays and media stations bring together different ways of presenting the subject. The exhibition thus juxtaposes original objects and vivid reproductions, as well as spatial displays and media offerings.

Active participation is also part of the exhibition experience: games, media applications and tactile stations engage visitors, complemented by an extensive educational programme. If you are planning a visit with children, you can take these different ways of exploring into account when planning your visit; an introductory family tour is another option.

At the foot of the castle stands the Protestant Margrave's Church. The sandstone building was erected in 1751 on the foundations of a Gothic place of worship dating from the 13th century. The church therefore brings together two clearly distinct building phases: the Gothic predecessor and the later Margrave's Church. It adds another architectural stop to the castle complex.

The regular tour schedule described includes a 75-minute introductory tour for adults on Sundays at 2 p.m., as well as a 75-minute introductory family tour on the first Sunday of each month at 11 a.m. If you are planning to join a tour, check the current dates before your visit.

Half-Timbered Houses, the Market Square and Local History

Many historic buildings define Cadolzburg, particularly around the market square and in the narrow lanes surrounding the castle complex. Grand half-timbered gables still generally face the market square. Alongside the castle, these houses give the townscape its own distinctive and easily recognisable character. Architecture enthusiasts can shift their attention from the castle complex to the façades and gables in the town.

Today, the market square provides a setting for the church festival and the traditional Advent market. It is therefore both part of the historic townscape and a venue for local traditions. If you are planning your trip around one of these events, factor its dates into your plans.

Another chapter in the town's history concerns the former local history museum of the Cadolzburg market: it reopened in a new form as the “Cadolzburg Historical Museum” on 6 April 2017. The former name, Heimathaus, and the opening under the museum's new name mark two milestones in the building's history.

Consider Breaks and Travel Connections When Looking for Accommodation

A picnic bench is available to visitors in a separate small garden area in the castle garden. It offers a place to take a break between activities. If you specifically plan to use the bench, briefly check whether it is available before your visit.

Cadolzburg is connected to local transport by the B8 and the Rangaubahn railway. The B8 provides a road connection, while the Rangaubahn provides a local rail connection. When looking for accommodation, you can weigh these travel connections alongside your interests—for example, a focus on the castle and exhibition, the historic townscape or a local tradition. The right accommodation for your trip depends on which of these aspects of Cadolzburg you most want to discover.
