Castell brings together winegrowing, nature watching, hiking trails and Baroque history. The grape hyacinths give spring a special theme; the C5 hiking trail passes natural and historical points of interest, while the palace park and museum barn offer other insights into the town. If you are looking for accommodation for a trip to Castell, you can use the kind of day you want as a starting point: wine, seasonal nature, hiking or local history. This helps you refine your travel plans without reducing Castell to just one experience.

Silvaner and Grape Hyacinths

The guided Silvaner experience takes you to Castell’s Hohnart, Schlossberg and Kirchberg vineyard sites. The hike includes tasting three Silvaner wines in the vineyard; a date can be arranged by appointment. Combining a walk through the named vineyard sites with a tasting brings the landscape and grape variety together in a guided experience. If this focus suits your trip, you can include arranging a date in your plans.

The guided spring walk “A Riot of Colour in the Vineyard” follows the slopes of Castell’s Schlossberg and draws attention to the rare, protected wild grape hyacinths in Castell. Depending on the weather, they bloom between 12 and 28 April; the timing varies from year to year. A date for the guided programme can be arranged by appointment. The walk offers a different seasonal focus from the wine tasting: here, the protected wild plants take centre stage.

Hiking the C5

The C5 Castell hiking trail starts and ends in Castell and passes the Gerichtslinde (court lime tree), the grape hyacinths, the castle tower ruins and the Celtic rampart. The points along the trail bring together natural and historical themes. Along the way, there are views across the Main Valley; in good weather, the view extends as far as the Rhön. The route combines several different impressions without requiring a particular walking time or level of difficulty.

Baroque Park and the History of Winegrowing

Castell Palace Park was laid out from 1686 to 1690, at the same time as the palace, in the early Baroque period. The Castell Museum Barn focuses on winegrowing in Castell, from earlier times to the modern era. Information panels with images and text, along with numerous exhibits, present the subject; the items on display also include the tools of a cabinetmaker from around 1900. The park and museum barn thus offer different ways to explore local history: the creation of a palace park in the Baroque period and the story of winegrowing, including historic craftsmanship.

Urban History in the Wider Kitzingen Destination

The wider Kitzingen destination focuses on the town’s own buildings. The Falterturm was built there between 1469 and 1496 as a watchtower on the outer town wall. The Marktturm is 39 metres high, originally formed part of the inner town wall and served as a watchtower and prison. The town hall on the market square is a significant historic building from the 16th century, built by Hans Eckart von Schaffhausen in the Renaissance style. These Kitzingen buildings provide a distinct historical focus: town walls, towers and Renaissance architecture take centre stage here, while Castell offers other themes through its vineyards, palace park and museum barn.
