Discover Volkach: Old Town, Wine and Culture
Accommodation in Volkach
Volkach’s historic town centre brings together Franconian restaurants, wine shops and wine bars. It is also home to historic buildings, a museum with a permanent exhibition, events in the market square, and cycling and nature trails. This gives you a choice of different focuses for your stay: local history and culture, wine, or time on the trails around town.
Local history in historic buildings and the museum
The Upper Gate, also known as Diebenturm, was built in the 13th century. The former prison cells are preserved inside. St Bartholomew’s Catholic Church also reflects a long history of construction: the foundation stone for the present church was laid in 1413, and building work continued until the 18th century. The church tower is 54 metres high. The gate and church offer distinct glimpses into the past and give anyone interested in the town’s development some tangible points of reference.
The Barockscheune Volkach Museum offers a different perspective on the town and region. The town opened the museum in 2003 in a renovated barn dating from 1714. The historic building features exposed shell-limestone walls and an unusual mansard hip roof. The permanent exhibition explores the history, landscape and culture of the Mainschleife, as well as Volkach’s cultural past.
There is a hands-on exhibition experience for children, too: since 2006, the town scribe of Volkach has guided young visitors through the exhibition. At six interactive stations, they can solve a secret code and open a safe. The museum thus combines historical themes with an activity that invites children to get involved.
Old Town, wine and the market square
The historic town centre is home to Franconian restaurants and numerous wine shops and wine bars. The Volkach ticket allows you to visit participating wine shops and sample a Silvaner or another wine from their selection. Participating wine shops may also be located outside Volkach. The ticket is available from the Volkacher Mainschleife Tourist Information Office in Volkach Town Hall. As participating venues and ticket details may change, it is best to check in advance.
Concerts, wine tastings and markets take place in the market square. If one of these events is a deciding factor in your trip, check the dates in advance. This lets you take your interest in culture and wine into account when planning your trip, without assuming a particular event date.
Cycling and nature as alternative focuses
The Main Cycle Route reaches Volkach at kilometre 29.2. Just before the Main Bridge, a path branches off towards the historic market square. This precise reference point links the route to a named destination in town. The Forest & Village Loop offers a different focus: it passes two lakes with diverse flora and fauna that provide an ideal habitat for common toads. The two routes therefore offer different points of reference if you are choosing between a cycle route connected to the historic market square and a nature-focused outing.
Art and tradition in the surrounding area
The Maria im Weingarten pilgrimage church lies close to Volkach. On a guided tour, you can learn more about faith, local customs and Tilman Riemenschneider’s famous Madonna of the Rosary. The church adds a perspective on religious art and tradition to the town’s historical attractions. If you would like to plan a visit, check the latest tour dates and availability before you travel.
Choose the right focus for your accommodation search
The town’s historic buildings and museum point to a cultural focus; wine shops, wine bars and events in the market square offer another. If you mainly plan to cycle or explore nature, use the Main Cycle Route and the Forest & Village Loop as a guide when making your choice. Consider which location would suit your trip, and check the specific details of the accommodation you are considering.
