Untersteinach offers a range of things to enjoy during a stay: the artistically designed interior of St. Oswald Parish Church, the leisure complex in the Hummendorfer Au and the start of the 22-kilometre Steinach-Rodach cycle path. This brings culture, exercise and leisure into your travel plans, with specific details that capture the character of the town.

Church art at St. Oswald

The interior of St. Oswald Parish Church combines a Late Gothic net vault with Baroque double galleries. The gallery paintings depict numerous biblical scenes. They were created after new wooden galleries were installed: in the choir in 1715 and in the nave in 1729/30. The vault has its own decorative layer, too. It was repainted in the Baroque style in 1955, with musical angels and colourful floral arrangements.

The dates mark different stages in the furnishing of the church interior. The paintings on the galleries bring biblical stories to life, while angels and flowers take centre stage on the vault. Together with the Late Gothic vault and Baroque double galleries, they create a layered impression in which different motifs and periods of design sit side by side. Anyone interested in architecture and religious art will find more than just one detail to admire here.

Leisure and cycling in Untersteinach

The leisure complex in the Hummendorfer Au has a five-a-side football pitch, a beach volleyball court and a barbecue area. The two sports facilities offer different ways to get active, while the barbecue area adds another leisure option. Alongside the church, this gives Untersteinach an active side that works well as a separate focus in your travel plans.

The Steinach-Rodach cycle path offers another specific option: the 22-kilometre route starts in Untersteinach on the Kulmbach–Bischofsgrün Main Cycle Route. This gives you various ways to choose between culture, leisure activities and cycling. The route is clearly defined by its starting point and total length, while the leisure complex brings several activities together in one place.

The nature trail on Kulmbacher Rehberg is about four kilometres long and has 21 learning stations. For a longer walk, try the Frankenwaldsteigla “Rehbergweg”: this eleven-kilometre circular trail runs from Plassenburg to Rehberg, through Kulmbach’s old town and back to the starting point. These offer a choice between a nature trail with learning stations and a circular walk linking several Kulmbach locations.

Kulmbach also offers several attractions for culture lovers. The German Tin Figure Museum at Plassenburg houses more than 300,000 individual figures arranged in around 150 dioramas. Burg Zwernitz in Wonsees was first mentioned in an official document in 1156 as the ancestral seat of the Walpoten family. The Sanspareil Rock Garden lies directly beside the castle; its features include the Rock Theatre in the grove, the Oriental Building and the Kitchen Building.

Museums covering a range of topics showcase further sides of the Kulmbach travel destination. The Bavarian Brewery Museum devotes more than 3,000 square metres to the history and art of brewing beer; a visit ends with a small tasting from the Glass Museum Brewery. At the German Steam Locomotive Museum in Neuenmarkt, more than 30 steam locomotives are preserved in a historically evolved railway landscape.
