Kulmbach combines striking architecture with museums and trails through the city and surrounding region. Plassenburg Castle towers above the city, serving as Kulmbach’s landmark and an observation point 116 metres above the city. The former Hohenzollern fortress houses four museums with collections and information about the history of the castle, the city of Kulmbach and the region.

Castle, Churches and Special Details

St. Peter’s Church also tells the story of Kulmbach’s architectural history: the late Gothic hall church was built in 1439. Its altar structure depicts the Deposition of Christ; the tower clock displays the words “Wachet-Betet” (“Watch and Pray”) in place of numerals. The architecture, image and unusual clock design each have their own distinctive character, without any one theme having to define the entire sightseeing tour.

The Rehturm on Rehberg was built in 1498 as a watch and signal tower. It is also part of a nature trail. Here, a historic structure and a route with educational stations come together among Kulmbach’s attractions. Another group of museums is located at Mönchshof: the Bavarian Brewery Museum, the Bavarian Bakery Museum and the German Spice Museum are all based there. The Brewery Museum devotes more than 3,000 square metres to the history and art of brewing; a visit ends with a sample from the Glass Museum Brewery.

Parking information is also useful when travelling to Mönchshof: there are 120 car parking spaces on the grounds. As parking arrangements may change, check this information again before your visit.

Hiking Trails with Different Routes

Several routes cross the Kulmbach urban area, but in different directions and over different total distances. The 520-kilometre Frankenweg crosses it from north to south. The Mainwanderweg follows the Main from its source in the Fichtel Mountains to its confluence with the Rhine near Mainz, passing through Kulmbach from east to west. The cultural and historical Burgenweg ends at Plassenburg Castle. The trails therefore differ not only in length, but also in whether the city is a stop on a long river route or the destination of a cultural and historical trail.

The wider Kulmbach destination also includes shorter and regional routes. The nature trail on Kulmbach’s Rehberg is about four kilometres long and has 21 educational stations. The Frankenwaldsteigla “Rehbergweg” is an eleven-kilometre circular route: it leads from Plassenburg Castle to Rehberg, through Kulmbach’s old town and back to the starting point. Both routes offer a different scale from the long-distance trails. Conditions on regional routes may change, so check the route and conditions before setting out.

Culture and Landscape in the Wider Kulmbach Destination

Beyond the city of Kulmbach, the destination includes other places and attractions. At Plassenburg Castle, the German Tin Figure Museum has more than 300,000 individual figures arranged in around 150 dioramas. In Wonsees, Zwernitz Castle was first mentioned in official documents in 1156 as the ancestral seat of the Walpoten family. Its tower can be climbed and offers sweeping views over the Franconian Switzerland Nature Park. The Sanspareil rock garden adjoins the castle; the rock theatre in the grove, the Oriental Building and the Kitchen Building have all been preserved to this day.

Railway and brewing history are also part of the region’s attractions: the German Steam Locomotive Museum in Neuenmarkt preserves more than 30 steam locomotives in a historically developed railway landscape. In Limmersdorf, an open-air exhibition documents the traditions and customs associated with dancing under lime trees. For hikers, the official hiking guide includes, among other routes, the 13.5-kilometre Große-Wonsees-Erlebnisrunde and an eleven-kilometre circular route between Thurnau and Kasendorf. The Steinachklamm near Presseck is an approximately 300-metre section of a natural monument between the Neumühle mill and the former Waffenhammer ironworks.

The Kulmbach region offers hiking, cycling and motorcycling tours across terrain ranging from gently rolling to challenging. The “Rund um Kulmbach” motorcycle tour starts and ends in Kulmbach and is just over 200 kilometres long. An official public transport connection runs from Kulmbach via Thurnau, Sanspareil and Wonsees to Hollfeld and Ebermannstadt. As timetables may change, check the current connection when planning your trip.
