Wonsees combines a landscape dotted with juniper with hiking trails and historic cultural sites. In the Juniper Valley, sun-exposed nutrient-poor grassland shapes the scenery; in Sanspareil, an oriental-style château and a ruin theatre that is still used for performances stand side by side. The Market Mill and Kneipp facilities also add their own distinctive features.

Juniper Valley: protected landscape

The Juniper Valley near Wonsees is a sun-exposed area of nutrient-poor grassland interspersed with juniper bushes and a protected landscape feature. Light-loving plant species thrive there, including the fragrant orchid and fringed gentian. The landscape and the specifically named plants offer nature enthusiasts different ways to get to know the valley.

Trails, mill and Kneipp facilities

The Market Mill in Wonsees is located directly on the Franconian Mountain Trail. The mill building was constructed in 1730, linking the hiking route with local history. One section of the Schwalbachtal Trail follows a narrow, green path from Zedersitz to Wonsees. The Great Wonsees Discovery Loop is laid out differently: in the wider Kulmbach travel destination, the official hiking guide lists it as a 13.5-kilometre route. When planning your hike, you can therefore distinguish between a described trail section and a designated loop.

The Wonsees Kneipp facility offers another activity: it consists of a renovated stone hut with a Kneipp pool. A wooden slider can be used to raise the water to the desired Kneipp level. There are three Kneipp facilities in the Wonsees municipal area in total. As well as hiking trails, your trip planning can therefore include facilities offering a different kind of water-based activity.

Sanspareil and history in Wonsees

The municipality of Wonsees is home to the Morgenländischer Bau in Sanspareil, a small château designed in an oriental style. A natural stage in the rock garden is home to the ruin theatre, which is still used for performances. Special guided tours take place every fourth Sunday from 1 April to 15 October, alternating between Zwernitz Castle and the rock garden. Check the specific dates before planning your visit. The Margrave Church of St. Laurentius also tells of past uses: it served as a fortified church and as a horse stable.

Kulmbach as a wider thematic setting

In the wider Kulmbach travel destination, additional routes and cultural sites broaden the choice. The nature trail on Kulmbach’s Rehberg is around four kilometres long and has 21 learning stations. The Frankenwaldsteigla “Rehbergweg” is an eleven-kilometre circular route from Plassenburg Castle to Rehberg, through Kulmbach’s old town and back to the starting point. In Wonsees, the hiking guide lists the 13.5-kilometre Great Wonsees Discovery Loop. The distances and route types provide different points of comparison when planning a hike.

Zwernitz Castle in Wonsees is also part of the wider Kulmbach travel destination. It was first mentioned in an official document in 1156 as the ancestral seat of the Walpoten family. Visitors can climb its tower for sweeping views across the Franconian Switzerland Nature Park. The castle is right next to the Sanspareil rock garden. The rock theatre in the grove, the Morgenländischer Bau and the Küchenbau have all been preserved there to this day.

Museums in Kulmbach offer a different focus from the landscape and trails: at the German Tin Figure Museum on Plassenburg Castle, more than 300,000 individual figures are arranged in around 150 dioramas. The Bavarian Brewery Museum devotes more than 3,000 square metres of exhibition space to the history and art of brewing; a visit ends with a tasting sip from the Glass Museum Brewery. An official public transport service runs from Kulmbach via Thurnau, Sanspareil and Wonsees to Hollfeld and Ebermannstadt. Check the current timetable before travelling.

When choosing your accommodation, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on: should your trip centre mainly on the landscape, trails and cultural sites in Wonsees, or would you also like to include routes and museums in the wider Kulmbach travel destination?
