Discover Marktzeuln through three distinctive features: the architectural history of St. Michael’s Parish Church, the half-timbered town hall on the Flecken, and the Rodach-Steinach-Main Three Rivers Trail. Culture and a walking or cycling tour go hand in hand here. If you’re looking for accommodation, first consider whether you want to focus your stay primarily on Marktzeuln’s buildings, the riverside route, or other cultural and nature-related attractions in the wider Lichtenfels travel destination.

Architectural History in Marktzeuln

St. Michael’s Parish Church is a hall church with a set-back choir, a roof turret and an east tower. A hall church has a single, continuous main space; the set-back choir is narrower. The roof turret is a small tower structure on the roof. The church’s design can be appreciated alongside its long history: the choir dates from the 14th century, the nave is essentially from 1541 and was remodeled in 1701.

The church’s early history also goes back a long way. The Zeulner’s first chapel was built between 1200 and 1300 and later became the choir of today’s St. Michael’s Parish Church. The building sections and dates therefore span the first chapel, the medieval choir, and the core of the nave and its remodeling. Anyone interested in architectural history will find several clearly distinct periods represented in one named church building.

The town hall offers a different style of architecture: at Am Flecken 29 stands a two-storey, gable-fronted half-timbered building with a pitched roof and a side stair tower. Hans Mühlhans and Karl Fuß built the town hall in 1690 on a 16th-century base. Its half-timbered construction, roof and stair tower give the building a different architectural character from the parish church. Together, the church and town hall provide two specific starting points for exploring Marktzeuln’s cultural history.

Exploring the Three Rivers Trail

For an active outing, choose the Rodach-Steinach-Main Three Rivers Trail. It is about 24.8 kilometers long, can be explored on foot or by bike, and follows the Rodach to Marktzeuln. The route complements the buildings as a second way to experience the town and appeals to travelers who want to include some activity in their plans. As route conditions can change, check the current situation before setting out.

More to Explore in the Wider Lichtenfels Travel Destination

In the wider Lichtenfels travel destination, the Path of Basketry Culture experience trail offers a different focus. The 14-kilometer trail connects Lichtenfels and Michelau along natural paths through the Main floodplains. Its 23 information boards explore the history and tradition of basket-making, the basket industry and basket trading in the Upper Main region. Near Oberwallenstadt, the trail includes a willow labyrinth for children, a willow shell at the river bathing area, a woven tipi at the Oberwallenstadt Ortswiesensee, and other examples of woven art.

Lichtenfels Old Town offers another way to explore the area’s cultural history: it has retained its distinctive Franconian character. The Bamberg Gate and Kronach Gate have been preserved, and parts of the old town wall are still visible. The Main Cycle Route also runs right through the old town. The Lichtenfels Basket Market takes place every year on the third weekend in September. The Lichtenfels City Palace houses municipal collections on the history of beer and brewing, the railway and basket trading; the exhibits may change.

The Kleinziegenfelder Valley is part of the natural scenery in the wider Lichtenfels travel destination. It is about 12 kilometers long and is mostly a protected nature area. The landscape is shaped by striking rock formations, clear streams, mills, half-timbered villages and characteristic juniper heaths with dry and semi-dry grassland slopes. At the small dig site by the “Waldfrieden” hiking car park, you can search for fossils and split them open. Hammers and safety glasses can be borrowed from the Weismain Environmental Station; check whether the equipment is available before you set off.
