Kleinwallstadt combines architectural history with a forest nature trail whose information boards share knowledge about trees, animals and the use of the forest. At the end of the trail, a sound tree awaits, complete with a small barrel organ; another historical attraction is the Old Castle in the Kleinwallstadt Forest. When choosing accommodation, you can consider whether you are most interested in architecture, observing nature or an unusual musical experience. The local attractions each have a different focus.

Templar House and Old Castle

The south façade of the Templar House still gives an impression of what the building must originally have looked like. It is one of the oldest secular buildings in Main Franconia. A specific architectural feature thus connects with a significance that extends beyond Kleinwallstadt. The Old Castle in the Kleinwallstadt Forest was a medieval castle complex dating from the second third of the 13th century. The two places offer different historical perspectives: at the Templar House, the still-visible façade design takes centre stage; at the Old Castle, it is the dating of the castle complex.

Forest Nature Trail, Wildlife Watching and Sound

When you arrive in Kleinwallstadt, you can reach the forest nature trail by following the signs towards “School/Swimming Pool”. Check the signposting on site. The images and text on the information boards cover the forest’s trees and animals, its past and present functions, and hunting. This offers several ways to learn about the forest: as a habitat and as a place whose use has changed over time. Right by the game field is a raised hide that anyone can use to watch wildlife.

The sound tree stands at the end of the forest nature trail. A small barrel organ is attached at one end; when it is turned, the melody can be heard at the other end. The sound tree is considered Kleinwallstadt’s longest musical instrument and possibly also the longest in the Miltenberg district. The information boards and sound mechanism appeal to different interests: here, learning about the forest goes hand in hand with a listening experience.

A Korbinian apple tree grows along the orchard experience trail, commemorating Korbinian Aigner. Aigner was a priest and pomologist who showed courage during the Nazi era. The orchard trail thus connects with the story of a specific historical figure.

Miltenberg as a broader travel destination

The wider Miltenberg travel destination offers further points of interest. Miltenberg district lies between the Odenwald and Spessart ranges and is characterised by deeply incised river and stream valleys. The Felsenmeer is a natural monument formed during the last ice ages, between 2.58 million and 11,700 years ago. Miltenberg’s municipal park, laid out in the style of an English park and as an arboretum at the end of the 19th century, is now home to nearly 150 different tree and shrub species.

The route also offers practical guidance: starting at Mildenburg Castle, the town walk leads through the municipal forest and through the Steintor gate. After turning at the Steintor, you can reach the Felsenmeer after about 600 metres. The Main Cycle Route offers the chance to discover numerous castles and castle ruins in the district, as well as their history. The Stadt Museum presents the history of Miltenberg and the surrounding region in three historic half-timbered houses at Miltenberg’s market square, the Schnatterloch.

For culture lovers, Miltenberg district’s Kulturwochen (Culture Weeks) offer a varied programme for all ages every year from mid-September. This includes concerts featuring classical and contemporary music, as well as jazz and electronic music events; individual offerings vary from year to year. Check the dates if you are planning your visit around them.

For trips in the Odenwald, hikers and cyclists can use the NeO-Bus and NaTourBus; bicycle trailers are available specifically for cyclists. Check seasonal transport information before travelling. Local wine can also shape your stay: visitors can go to one of the many Häckerwirtschaften (seasonal wine taverns) or wine festivals in the district. Dates for individual events vary.
