Eschau: Cultural Trails, Art and Castles in the Elsava Valley
Accommodation in Eschau
At the foot of Geishöhe, the market town of Eschau lies in the Elsava Valley and the Spessart Nature Park. Cultural trails, historic buildings and places to relax offer a range of experiences: sometimes the landscape takes centre stage, sometimes art or the history of castles and palaces. You can plan your trip around the impressions you would like to take home.
Cultural trails between Eschau and Hobbach
The 7.5-kilometre European Cultural Trail “Burg Wildenstein” explores the cultural landscape between Eschau and the castle. On the return leg, it follows the Elsava Valley along the old railway line. Another loop starts in the district of Hobbach: the European Cultural Trail there is about seven kilometres long and climbs around 100 metres. From St John’s Church, the route passes the Dillhof and Oberaulenbach Castle, then the Wolfsgrube and a viewpoint, before continuing into the Elsava Valley to the Hobbach school camp and back to the church.
The trails have different focuses: the “Burg Wildenstein” Cultural Trail links the cultural landscape with the castle, while the Hobbach loop takes in several named stops. The long-distance Spessart Trail 2 also passes through Eschau. If you would like to plan your hike around specific stopping points, the Hobbach trail offers a sequence of named places; on the other cultural trail, the valley and castle shape the route.
Art and architectural history in Sommerau and Wildenstein
The Sommerau Sculpture Garden displays numerous surrealist sculptures by artist Karin Günther among flower beds, shrubs and old trees. In the background are the former Fechenbach noble palace and the small castle “Malepartus”. Four guided tours take place each year between May and September, usually on a Sunday afternoon. They first focus on Karin Günther’s artistic work, then on the history of the former noble palace and its residents. Check the specific dates before planning your visit.
Wildenstein Castle is a medieval fortification on a mountain ridge of Sommerberg, above Wildenstein, a village belonging to Eschau. It is freely accessible and has several information boards. At Sommerau Water Castle, a castle wing built in 1650, the remains of an older defensive tower and the surrounding moat have been preserved. The castle is privately owned and is not open to the public; in some cases, a visit may be possible by prior arrangement with the owner.
Relaxation and different ways to spend the day
The Wildensee leisure area offers a lake, a relaxation jetty, a foot-washing facility, a boules court and barbecue huts. Hobbach’s Bahndamm offers a different experience: this small local recreation park has benches, a playground, a mud play area and a basketball hoop. The two places offer different things to do, from spending time by the water and playing boules to enjoying play and exercise in the park.
When choosing your accommodation, consider which of these experiences you would like to shape your itinerary: cultural trails and the castle, art and architectural history, or relaxation at the leisure area and in the park. Then check the location of your chosen accommodation in relation to the places you plan to visit. This way, your search reflects the kind of stay you have in mind, without requiring every day to have the same focus.
Practical information for Eschau
The Epiphany Church in Eschau is open daily from 09:30 to 17:30 for quiet contemplation and prayer. As opening hours may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit. The Historic Town Hall is also home to the Burglandschaft Education and Information Centre, which provides a wide range of information about the regional network of castles.
Also take note of how to get to the Spessart Experience Centre: it cannot be reached directly by car. Visitors park at the kindergarten or on a side street, then walk through nature for about twelve minutes to reach the centre. Check the parking information before setting off.
Culture in the wider destination of Miltenberg
The wider destination of Miltenberg also has cultural attractions with their own distinct focuses. Miltenberg Castle Museum displays 16 Greek and Russian icons from the 16th to the 19th century alongside works by contemporary artists. The Town Museum explores the urban and regional history of Miltenberg and is housed in three historic half-timbered buildings on the market square, known as Schnatterloch. These museums offer additional options for travellers who would like to explore more art and history alongside Eschau’s buildings and cultural trails.
