Mömlingen offers several distinct themes to explore: volcanic geology, a museum covering local and everyday history, and two neighboring churches built in different periods. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on the Geopark Trail, the town’s history or excursions in the surrounding area. You can combine the different themes without having to follow a fixed itinerary.

Geology and historic traces along the Geopark Trail

At Station 3 of the “Fire and Water” Geopark Trail, you can see basalt tuff and a basalt dike. They were formed during the eruption of the “Mühlhansenloch Maar” and bring the geological history to life at a specific point along the trail. The route also passes traces of the area’s past: the former “Berta” iron ore mine, which dates to the 19th century, and a reconstructed section of the Electoral Mainz border fortification. This former border defense dates to the 15th century. The trail thus brings natural history and different periods of human history side by side, without blending them into a single historical period.

Museum and Mömlingen’s local history

Since 1997, the Mömlingen School and Local History Museum has been housed on the second floor and in the attic of the “Alte Schule” community center. The building was constructed from Mömlingen sandstone. The museum’s exhibits also cover a range of periods: the archaeological exhibition “Longhouses and Mounted Warriors” explores history from the first Stone Age settlers to Mömlingen in the modern era. It opened to the public in September 2017; please check current access arrangements before your visit.

Another topic is home sewing. From the late 19th century through the 1960s, it provided many people in Mömlingen with a good source of income. Before that, many—mostly small farmers—had been able to get by only modestly. The home sewing room in the museum had previously been exhibited at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. Together, these details offer an economic and everyday perspective on local history alongside the archaeological themes.

Two churches, built in different periods

St. Martin, a Baroque church built between 1774 and 1777, is Mömlingen’s landmark. The Catholic parish church of Corpus Domini was built directly beside it between 1961 and 1963. It is considered an example of modern church architecture and has two stained-glass windows that extend the full height of the building. The neighboring churches make the contrast in period and architecture especially tangible: a Baroque church stands beside a modern one. This gives you another local area to explore during your stay, alongside the Geopark Trail and the museum.

Outdoor activities and regional loop tours

The permanent mountain bike loop in Mömlingen starts at the Löwen parking lot, opposite the town hall. If you would like to include other tours in your trip, several regional loop routes head from Mömlingen through other towns and back.

“Through the Mümling Valley to Bad König” runs via Lützel-Wiebelsbach, Breitenbrunn, Bad König, Höchst and Breuberg. The “Loop Tour to Otzberg Castle” goes via Wald-Amorbach, Wiebelsbach, Otzberg, Höchst and Breuberg. “From the Mümling Valley to the Main Valley” runs via Seckmauern, Lützel-Wiebelsbach, Rai-Breitenbach and Hainstadt. The names and listed intermediate towns distinguish the three tours; check the route details before setting out.

Miltenberg as a distinctive regional highlight

In the wider destination of Miltenberg, the Stadt Museum offers a different way to explore the history of Miltenberg and the region. It is housed in three historic half-timbered buildings on the market square, the Schnatterloch. The Miltenberg District Cultural Weeks can also complement your trip: they take place annually from mid-September and include, among other things, classical and contemporary music, jazz and electronic music. Specific dates and events vary.
