Zangberg: Churches, Monastery and Tours
Accommodation in Zangberg
Zangberg brings together churches, monastery history and named tours. In Palmberg, on days with a föhn wind, the view opens out across the Isen Valley as far as the Alps. In Weilkirchen, a residential house built entirely of wood and a Baroque church tell of different eras. There is also a monastery with a history as a castle and convent, as well as routes that pass through the town. These themes offer different starting points for getting to know Zangberg according to your travel interests.
Views and places of remembrance in Palmberg
From the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Palmberg, the view reaches across the Isen Valley as far as the Alps on days with a föhn wind. The view is therefore dependent on a particular weather condition. The grave of the writer Martin Greif (1839–1911) lies at the southeast corner of the church. The last two stations of the modern Way of the Cross, along the footpath from Ampfing to Palmberg, stand in front of the church. Landscape, literature and religious art are linked here through specific places. If you are interested in these different themes, you can consider them as separate focuses when planning your trip.
The Thurnerhaus and St. George’s Church in Weilkirchen
The Thurnerhaus stands in the district of Weilkirchen and is considered the oldest rural residential house in the district. It was built entirely of wood around 1500. The bell tower of the Baroque Church of St. George stands behind the house; the church itself is a little farther down the slope. In Weilkirchen, the architectural history of a rural home and Baroque church architecture thus come together.
According to tradition, a watchtower for the Augsburg–Wels Roman road stood on the site of the bell tower in Roman times. This historical tradition adds an older layer to the town’s history. Together with the approximate dating of the Thurnerhaus and the Baroque Church of St. George, it creates a broad sweep through time: from the Roman period, through the wooden house built around 1500, to the later church architecture.
From castle to monastery
Zangberg Monastery was formerly a baronial castle and has been a convent of the Salesian Sisters since 1862. The Ancestral Hall is considered the most beautiful and lavish hall in the district. The monastery is occasionally open to visitors during concerts held there. If you would like to include this in your travel plans, check the specific concert date. The building’s changing history and conditional access make the monastery a cultural focus distinct from the churches in Palmberg and Weilkirchen.
