Betzigau can be explored through a range of different themes: cross-country trails, seasonally groomed winter walking paths, art by the stream and reed-fringed Notzenweiher Pond each add their own distinctive touch. The Allgäu foothills around Betzigau are rolling countryside with a rural character; wide meadows, forests, streams and hidden little lakes such as Notzenweiher Pond define this broader landscape. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the specific routes and cultural themes separately.

Trails with different route profiles

The Wolkenberg Trail is 2.0 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and runs as a connecting trail from the B12 bridge to the Kempter Wald Trail. The connecting route between the Wolkenberg Trail and the Moos Trail is also 2.0 kilometres long. It is also of moderate difficulty, but includes a gentle climb. The same stated distance therefore refers to two different connections: for the Wolkenberg Trail, the route between the B12 bridge and Kempter Wald is described; for the connecting route, the link to the Moos Trail and the gentle climb provide additional points of reference.

The Moos Trail offers a different scale: it is 10 kilometres long, easy, and runs from the Wildpoldsried sports ground via Bogenried to Betzigau/Weiher. Taken together, the distance, difficulty rating and route give a clearer picture than the length alone. Compare these details when planning your cross-country ski outing. Grooming and parking conditions may vary; check the latest information before your planned trip.

Winter walking paths for pedestrians

Those who prefer to get around on foot will find a winter walking path and an energy trail along the Leubas. Both are groomed in cooperation with the municipality of Wildpoldsried, are each about 10 kilometres long, and are intended for pedestrians, with or without a dog. The paths are prepared seasonally; their approximate length gives you a guide for planning your day, without promising the same experience on both routes. Compared with the 10-kilometre Moos Trail, the distance is similar, but the intended use is different: these are walking paths, while the other is a cross-country ski trail.

Art by the stream, pond and chapel

ART BY THE STREAM brings together artworks and the stream that runs through the municipality of Betzigau. Since 2004, artists have presented their works there to a wide audience. Notzenweiher Pond adds another water feature: this reed-fringed bathing pond is the “local pond” of the people of Betzigau. Together, the stream and pond show two different sides of the place—one as a setting for an art exhibition, the other as a distinctive landscape feature.

The Völk Chapel is located near Betzigau, above Bachtel on the footpath from Betzigau via Heinzelberg to Stein. May devotions are held in the chapel; if these are an important part of your visit, check the current arrangements in advance. In 1997, the brothers Roman and Manfred carried out an extensive renovation of the chapel. This place brings together a specific location, religious use and a named chapter in its more recent history.

Betzigau and the wider Oberallgäu destination

Betzigau is part of the wider Oberallgäu destination. Those who look beyond the local attractions to the Oberallgäu will find further distinct highlights: Oberstdorf has 200 kilometres of hiking trails and nature trails. The Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill can be visited; visitors can take the tower elevator to the viewing platform on the hill’s tower.

The Nagelfluhkette Nature Park Centre in Immenstadt-Bühl is located right on Lake Alpsee. It has a free-to-visit interactive exhibition about animals, plants, their habitats and the special features of the protected area. Check the current opening arrangements before planning a visit specifically for this purpose. Betzigau therefore offers a distinct focus on cross-country trails, winter walking paths, art by the stream and pond landscapes, while the Oberallgäu adds other places and themes to your trip planning.
