Discover Oberallgäu
Accommodation in Oberallgäu
Oberallgäu offers a wide variety of things to discover: long hiking trails, gorges, winter sports routes, museums and regional food served in mountain huts. This diversity is especially clear at specific places: Oberstdorf combines hiking trails with a ski flying hill and a network of cross-country ski trails; in Immenstadt, a themed trail and the nature park centre lead to Lake Alpsee. When planning your trip, you can decide whether outdoor activities, insights into nature and history, or a mix of the two should take centre stage.
Hiking, gorges and winter routes
Oberstdorf has 200 kilometres of hiking trails and nature trails. At Breitachklamm, you can explore the gorge on well-maintained, secured paths. Conditions may vary seasonally. Starzlachklamm, between Burgberg and Sonthofen, is a starting point for hiking and canyoning. This gives you a choice of two different ways to enjoy an active outing here; conditions and access may vary.
If you would like to enjoy a special view in Oberstdorf, you can visit the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill. The tower lift takes you to the viewing platform on the ski jump tower. This makes for a different kind of outing from a hike or gorge exploration: the ski jump and the view from its tower are the main attractions.
In winter, the World Championship trail network at the Nordic Centre Oberstdorf/Allgäu includes more than 30 different route options. These include a 6.25-kilometre loop with the steep Burgstall climb. Trail availability is seasonal. The 6.25-kilometre loop with its steep Burgstall climb gives you a specific point of reference when planning your winter activities.
At Lake Alpsee: nature park centre and themed trail
The Nagelfluhkette Nature Park Centre is located in Immenstadt-Bühl, right by Lake Alpsee. It features a free interactive exhibition about animals, plants, their habitats and the special features of the protected area. It combines a lakeside location with insights into the nature of the protected area.
From Immenstadt railway station, you can walk to the nature park centre in 30 minutes via the Achis Wasserweg themed trail. In bad weather, bus routes 39, 11 and 81 go there. If you plan to use this connection for an outing, check bus availability and journey times again before you set off. This also lets you compare the journey with a walk along the themed trail.
Another destination in Immenstadt is the Allgäu Mountain Farming Museum in Diepolz. As an interactive open-air museum, it documents the lives of Allgäu mountain farmers in historic buildings. It complements the nature exhibits at Lake Alpsee with a look at how people used to live in the region. Opening is seasonal; check visiting hours if you would like to include the museum in your day’s plans.
Mining history, cycling and regional cuisine
At the Erzgruben Erlebniswelt on Grünten, a guided hike takes you to old mine tunnels. Along the way, you learn about the work of the miners of the time. This outing offers a different focus from a nature exhibition or gorge: the tunnels and the history of mining take centre stage.
Cycling in Oberallgäu ranges from leisurely rides to more challenging routes. Cosy mountain huts serve regional specialities. If you plan to stop for a meal, check what the individual hut offers. When planning your trip, you can decide whether cycling or stopping for regional specialities should be the main focus.
Compare the location of your accommodation with the places you would like to visit, and plan the journeys for your chosen destinations. This way, your search is guided not only by the name of the region, but also by which discoveries matter most to you.
