Kreuzthal lies in a forested part of the Allgäu foothills. The border between Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg runs through the village along the Eschach Valley, separating the hills of the Adelegg. Forest, valley and Adelegg give the village a distinctive landscape setting.

The Glasiusweg trail connects a route with the history of glassmaking, while the parish church of St. Martin adds a distinctive feature with its historic timber construction. This lets you decide which themes should shape your stay before comparing accommodation options.

The Glasiusweg Trail and the History of Glassmaking

The Glasiusweg trail is just over four kilometres long and has 16 play and information stations about the history of glassmaking in the Adelegg. Its stations are based on historical models and tell the story of glassmaking during the “Glass Era” from 1654 to 1898. This period spans almost two and a half centuries.

You can start the Glasiusweg trail in Kreuzthal at the Gasthof Kreuz. Trail details may change if the route is revised; check them, along with access arrangements for the starting point, before travelling.

St. Martin: Building History and Archaeological Finds

The Catholic parish church of St. Martin in Kreuzthal is listed in the Bavarian monument inventory (as of 22 July 2025) as a listed building dating from 1746. Its timber construction is clad with shingles on the outside and plastered on the inside. Medieval and early modern archaeological finds have also been discovered in the area of the church and its cemetery. This brings building history and archaeological layers from different periods together in the same part of the village.

The wider destination of Buchenberg has other distinct themes to explore. The old St. Nicholas Church in Buchenberg stands on the heights above the Glasbach Valley. Its exact construction date is unknown; much points to it having been built after 1122, and its frescoes date from the first quarter of the 15th century. The Historical Farms and Mills Hiking Trail, designed by the local history association, also runs through the Glasbach Valley; information boards mark historic sites. The Bodenlehrpfad is a 1.6-kilometre circular trail through Wirlinger Forest, with nine stations about the functions of soil and walkable soil profiles.
