Regenstauf brings together history, nature and things to discover at the Schlossberg. In the Regentalaue, the bird and environmental education station complements this connection with nature through wild bird care and environmental education. Another seasonal option is a ride on the Zille Marienthal. The area’s attractions range from traces of the past to exploring nature.

Schlossberg: History, nature and play

A castle on the Schlossberg in Regenstauf was finally destroyed in 1504 during the War of the Landshut Succession and was never rebuilt. The Schlossberg grounds were redesigned with a focus on nature as part of a Leader project, and are a varied attraction for young and old alike in the heart of Regenstauf.

The Schlossberg has an information centre about the site’s nature and history, as well as two knight-themed playgrounds. For families, the playgrounds offer a practical place to start; those who would also like to learn about the site can explore topics relating to the Schlossberg’s history and nature at the information centre.

Parts of the Schlossberg are designated nature and bird protection areas, providing a habitat for numerous songbird species, including some that are rare. Birds of prey and owls, woodpeckers and smaller mammals also live there. For visitors interested in nature and bird conservation, the Schlossberg offers another point of interest alongside its castle history.

The observation tower on the Schlossberg offers views of the surrounding area and has a café. If you plan to visit the café, check in advance whether it will be open on the day of your visit.

Explore nature in the Regentalaue

The Regenstauf bird and environmental education station is right by the river in the Regentalaue and offers a variety of ways to explore nature. It is a care centre for native wild birds and an environmental education facility for all age groups. Caring for native wild birds and sharing environmental knowledge are at the heart of its work.

Guided tours feature eagle owls, peregrine falcons, white storks and other birds cared for there. The Microcosm of Nature programme offers fascinating views through a microscope. Events and guided tours for adults are also available, and children’s birthday parties can be held there too. The topics range from individual bird species to observations of the microcosm.

This can help you choose a destination based on the experiences that interest you most.

In the wider Regensburg destination

In the wider Regensburg destination, the Walhalla in Donaustauf offers a distinct cultural and historical focus. Since 1842, this neoclassical hall of fame has honoured notable Germans and people connected with German history with marble busts and commemorative plaques. Its exterior is Doric in style and features 52 columns. From the bus stop, a walk of about 20 minutes, via 358 steps, leads to the Walhalla.

From Easter to October, passenger boats operated by Klinger and Wurm & Noé travel on the Danube from Regensburg’s Stone Bridge to the foot of the Walhalla. If you plan to take a boat trip, check the dates in advance. The nine-hectare Nepal-Himalaya Park in Wiesent offers a different focus, bringing together Asian culture and nature with a Nepalese temple, a diverse perennial garden and numerous Asian artworks. The park includes a Himalayan garden and a Chinese garden, as well as more than 6,200 different plant species.
