The Regensburg destination combines neoclassical commemorative culture, landscaped gardens and active pursuits. The selection ranges from Walhalla, Wolfsegg Castle and Nepal-Himalaya Park to cycling and hiking trails, climbing elements and water sports. When planning a stay, it is worth deciding first which experiences matter most: Would you like to focus on architecture and history, explore gardens or make time for physical activity?

Walhalla: Architecture and Remembrance

Walhalla near Donaustauf is one of Germany’s important neoclassical buildings. Its exterior is designed in the Doric style and defined by 52 columns. As a neoclassical memorial and hall of fame on the Danube, it has honored notable Germans and individuals associated with German history since 1842; marble busts and commemorative plaques give this function a tangible form. Architecture and remembrance come together here: the colonnaded building and its role as a hall of fame offer two distinct perspectives on the site.

From the Stone Bridge in Regensburg, passenger boats operated by Klinger and Wurm & Noé travel along the Danube to the foot of Walhalla from Easter through October. Check operating days before your trip. From the bus stop, it is about a 20-minute walk to Walhalla via 358 steps. This means there are two different ways to plan your visit: seasonal boat services from Regensburg and the walk from the bus stop.

Gardens, Castle Life and Baierwein

In Wiesent, the nine-hectare Nepal-Himalaya Park brings together Asian culture and nature. A Nepalese temple, a diverse perennial garden and numerous Asian works of art shape the grounds. The park also includes a Himalayan garden and a Chinese garden, as well as more than 6,200 different plant species. Its focus clearly differs from Walhalla: here, gardens, plant diversity and art come together, while Walhalla centers on neoclassical architecture and remembrance. The Nepal-Himalaya Pavilion can be reached from Wiesent on a 2.8-kilometer hike.

The Wolfsegg Castle is one of the best-preserved castle complexes in the region. Its rooms house a castle museum that was completely redesigned in 2019. It aims to bring life in a medieval castle to life in its authentic setting. The focus is therefore on castle life and history at their original site, while Walhalla is dedicated to honoring the distinguished.

Another way to explore regional history is the wine education trail associated with the Baierwein Museum in Bach an der Donau, which is open at all times. It provides information about the past and present of Baierwein and introduces White Elbling as the local grape variety. Together, the park, castle museum and wine trail offer different themes for a stay: garden art and plants, medieval castle life, or the history of winemaking.

Trails, Water and Activity

The signposted Fruit Experience Trail runs for about 34 kilometers from Hemau via Beratzhausen to Kallmünz. Twelve large information boards stand along the cycling route. The Regensburg Castle Trails hiking network offers a different scale: since 2007, the Kallmünz castle ruins have been linked with 44 other castles and castle ruins in the surrounding area; the network comprises five hiking routes totaling 200 kilometers. This makes it possible to choose between a named cycling route and a larger network of hiking routes.

The Regensburg Climbing Forest in Riegling near Sinzing has 14 courses and 135 climbing elements of varying difficulty. At Guggenberger See near Neutraubling, divers, windsurfers and small-boat sailors may pursue their sport in a designated area. Dream Alpakas offers guided alpaca hikes, also known as alpaca trekking, from its alpaca farm in Altenthann; confirm availability before booking. Climbing, water sports and guided hikes provide different ways to include active experiences in your trip.

Experiences to Guide Your Accommodation Search

The places and activities you plan to visit give your search a clear direction: Walhalla and its neoclassical hall of remembrance, the gardens and plant life in Wiesent, the history of castles and winemaking, or an active day on a cycling route, climbing or by the lake. The named starting points can also help you organize your plans: the boat connection begins at the Stone Bridge, the route to the Nepal-Himalaya Pavilion starts in Wiesent, and the Fruit Experience Trail starts in Hemau. First choose the experiences that will shape your stay, then look for accommodation that suits your travel plans.
