Bayerbach combines a distinctive landscape with several hiking options and traces of its cultural heritage. Numerous cultural monuments alternate with the extensive Rott floodplains and the wooded ridges of Steinberg. The hikes vary in length, difficulty and duration, so you can plan your day around the tour you would like to take.

Landscape and small cultural sites

In the main village of Bayerbach, a village green with a distinctive, majestic oak tree invites you to linger. It offers a different accent from the extensive Rott floodplains and the wooded heights of Steinberg, which help shape the character of the landscape. Together, these impressions make this a destination where nature and cultural themes sit side by side, without limiting your stay to just one way of enjoying the outdoors.

Nearby, in Huckenham, stands the small church of St. Margaretha. It is a former castle chapel and is counted among the oldest testimonies of faith in the region, possibly even in all of Lower Bavaria. The church’s former purpose and the cautiously worded assessment of its significance are part of its distinctive history.

Five hikes compared

The route distance and stated duration provide a practical guide when planning your hikes. Bayerbach Loop 1 is of moderate difficulty, 6.9 kilometres long and estimated to take 1 hour 40 minutes; the ascent and descent are each 37 metres. The Huckenham Loop is also of moderate difficulty: 7.7 kilometres, 1 hour 55 minutes, and 83 metres of ascent and descent each.

  • Langwinkl Loop: an easy hike of 5.7 kilometres, taking 1 hour 25 minutes, with 79 metres of ascent and descent each.
  • Great Langwinkl Loop: a moderately difficult hike of 7.8 kilometres, taking 2 hours, with 131 metres of ascent and descent each.
  • Great Bayerbach Loop: a difficult hike of 14 kilometres, taking 3 hours 35 minutes, with 265 metres of ascent and descent each.

By comparison, the Langwinkl Loop is the shortest and is rated easy. At 14 kilometres and 3 hours 35 minutes, the Great Bayerbach Loop is the longest of the five routes and the only one rated difficult. Between them are several moderately difficult loops, each with its own distance and duration. Check trail conditions before setting out, as local routes may change.

Routes with their own character

The Langwinkl Loop starts in the centre of Bayerbach and heads out of the village along Schulstraße, passing the Vater-Mutter-Kind-Klinik. It passes through Volkertsham; Hellham is in view but the route does not go there. The Great Langwinkl Loop passes Steinberg, goes through Kronwitt, Niederngruber and Wagenöder, and runs through the new, small settlement of Raumoos before returning to Bayerbach. These specific routes add the different places along the way to the comparison of distances and durations.

More to explore in the wider Rottal-Inn destination

Visitors who explore the wider Rottal-Inn destination as well as Bayerbach will find more ideas for different kinds of holiday days. The Rottal Terme has more than 30 thermal-water pools with temperatures from 26 to 40 °C, as well as 13 different saunas and steam baths. Its facilities also include a 105-metre-long thermal stream and health, prevention and wellness services. Figures and specific facilities may change when renovations are carried out.

Culture and regional discoveries are also part of the wider range of attractions: every year, Theater an der Rott presents premieres in drama, musicals, concerts, dance, operetta and opera. It is the only theatre in Germany owned by a district. The “Gothic Tours” lead to selected Gothic monuments; brochures, maps and digital portals help visitors find their way. The Gothic Portal offers on-site audio guides to Gothic buildings, as well as an online museum with information, knowledge and learning resources.

Cycling and hiking trails are also central to exploring the wider Rottal-Inn region. The Inn Cycle Path runs through the Unterer Inn European Reserve and offers a glimpse of the area’s flora and fauna in the Rottal-Inn leisure region. An extensive network of trails offers several hundred kilometres of routes for hikers and cyclists. For planning your own route, the tour portal provides elevation profiles, information on trail conditions and GPX downloads. In 2026, the Rottaler Hoftour will also be part of the wider Rottal-Inn offering: its programme focuses on rural life, everyday work, animals, farming culture, traditional crafts, handicraft techniques and regional specialities.
