Discover Wipfeld: Wine Trails, the Main and History
Accommodation in Wipfeld
Wipfeld is a small wine-growing village with a rich history, located on the Main loop. Vineyards, a historic village center and trails with different themes give your stay a clear focus: you can experience the landscape on a circular trail, follow in the footsteps of Conrad Celtis through the village, or explore its architectural and artistic history.
Vineyards and Circular Trails
The Zehntgrafen Wine Trail is a 3.3-kilometer circular trail through the vineyards of Wipfeld. It highlights the landscape, while the Historic Celtis Circular Trail leads through the village lanes to historic buildings and sites. This trail honors Conrad Celtis (1459–1508), regarded as Wipfeld’s most famous son and the first crowned German poet. At its 22 stations, information boards describe historic buildings and sites. The trail starts on Mainstraße, runs clockwise through the village and ends at St. John’s Parish Church. A detour to the Zehntgrafen Wine Trail is possible. You can therefore choose between a trail through the vineyards and a series of historic stops, or include the possible detour in your plans.
The Zehntgrafen Arbor, a rest stop maintained by the Wipfeld Winegrowers’ Association, is located along the Zehntgrafen Wine Trail. Visitors can sample regional wines there. Wipfeld is considered one of the district’s most characteristically wine-growing villages; the village has various wine festivals, seasonal wine taverns and wine bars. If you want to plan your trip around a particular wine festival, check the dates in advance.
Local History and Culture
You can also experience the village’s history firsthand on the Celtis Circular Trail. It passes the Wipfeld Literature House, a literary museum and cultural center for the village. The village center has well-preserved architectural ensembles, adding a sense of how the historic buildings fit together to complement the stops devoted to individual buildings.
Several construction phases can be distinguished at St. John the Baptist Parish Church: the Julius Echter Tower was built in 1599, the choir followed in 1615, and the Neoclassical nave was built between 1786 and 1790. The furnishings also reflect the work of different artists and their origins. The high altar is by Materno Bossi. The figures on the predella come from the former Heidenfeld Monastery and were created by Johann Peter Wagner. The Church of St. Ludwig Monastery, in turn, was built in the Beuron style and is an important testament to religious and cultural history.
The Main Landscape and Wildlife Watching
From the Generations Square on the Main, you can watch boats and observe the stork’s nest in the “Mainaue bei St. Ludwig” nature reserve. The Generations Square complements the large playground. The lookout hill on the Speiersberg offers a different landscape experience: at 325 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest points on the Main loop. This means that views from the Main and the elevated lookout point offer different reasons to visit, alongside the vineyards and historic village center.
Getting Around and Choosing Accommodation
Wipfeld has cycling and hiking trails. From the surrounding area, the village is easy to reach via the Main Cycle Route and by Main ferry. If you plan to take the ferry on your way there, check the timetable in advance.
