Falkenberg combines a historic townscape with distinctive natural attractions: the castle, the Waldnaab Valley and routes through the town offer different focuses for a trip.

Burgfelsen and the Waldnaab Valley

The Waldnaab Valley is a nature reserve between Falkenberg and Windischeschenbach. It offers a distinctive landscape feature alongside Falkenberg Castle. The castle’s Burgfelsen rock formation lies on the edge of Steinwald Nature Park and is one of Bavaria’s most beautiful geotopes. In Falkenberg, then, the castle and its rock are not only historic landmarks but also part of a special geological distinction. Visitors interested in nature and culture can consider both as different reasons to include a stay in their travel plans.

Castle tours and routes through Falkenberg

Public tours of Falkenberg Castle take place year-round on Sundays and public holidays at 3:30 p.m. The meeting point is at the castle bridge. No tours are offered on Good Friday, All Saints’ Day, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Check the schedule in advance for your planned visit. Groups of ten or more can also book tours outside regular opening hours.

The trails also offer different perspectives on the town. At the start of the third stage of the Goldsteig trail, a short walk through Falkenberg is a good option. It takes in the castle, the historic townscape, a balancing rock and the communal brewery. The Graf-von-der-Schulenburg circular trail goes around Falkenberg Castle and along the Waldnaab. Depending on your interests, you can choose between a short walk with several stops in town and a route featuring the castle and river.

Culture and cuisine in Tirschenreuth

Tirschenreuth offers its own distinctive regional cultural attractions. The MuseumsQuartier combines the Upper Palatinate Fisheries Museum with six other specialist exhibitions in a former monastery. Visitors can explore nearly 1,000 years of fishing and fish-farming history and see native fish in four large aquariums. Special exhibitions, talks, readings and concerts are also held regularly; check the relevant event dates when planning your visit.

The historic Fischhof Bridge and the Fischhof, which houses the district court, are located in the center of Fischhofpark in Tirschenreuth. Tirschenreuth is also associated with regional cuisine: the district is known for Zoigl, the Upper Palatinate Forest’s traditional beer, and for carp from the ponds of the “Land of 1,000 Ponds.” These attractions are in Tirschenreuth and complement a distinct perspective on its culture and pond landscape.

Choose the right focus

If castle tours, the historic townscape, and the routes and landscapes described here are your main interests, Falkenberg is a good destination to search for. Tirschenreuth offers a separate focus on fishing history, aquariums, Fischhofpark and fish farming.
