Trostberg: Trails, Riverbanks and Views
Accommodation in Trostberg an der Alz
Trostberg offers something for different kinds of stays: trails through fields and quiet forests, shady paths along the Alz, a rose garden for picnics and views stretching as far as the Alps. There is also a skate park and a heated outdoor pool.
Trails, Views and Activities
The Oberfeldkirchner Circuit leads through open fields and quiet forests to Trostberg. There, you can enjoy views across the small town and as far as the Alps. If you are looking for a trail with a different destination in mind, try the Schlossberg paths: they are the shortest route from Trostberg’s old town to the hospital.
In good weather, the Schlossberg paths, at one of the highest points in the town, offer views across Trostberg, toward Baumburg Abbey in neighboring Altenmarkt, and as far as the Berchtesgaden and Chiemgau Alps. The two trail descriptions therefore differ considerably: the Oberfeldkirchner Circuit leads through fields and forests to Trostberg, while the Schlossberg paths connect the old town and the hospital and offer views within the town.
The skate park is on JahnstraĂźe, opposite the P9 Festplatz/Sportzentrum parking lot. In winter, several kilometers of cross-country ski trails are groomed around Trostberg, weather permitting.
The Alz, Picnics and the Outdoor Pool
Along the Alz, gravel bars in Trostberg invite you to linger by the river or cool off in the water. Shady paths along the river are ideal for walks. The same stretch of riverbank thus offers both a chance to get active on the trails and a place to take a break on the gravel bars.
Picnics are welcome in the rose garden. Seating is available, or you can bring your own blanket. The heated outdoor pool in Trostberg has a 50-meter sports pool and a 220-meter-long outdoor swimming channel. Check current opening and seasonal availability before visiting.
When planning your trip, you can choose between these experiences according to your interests: walks, picnics and swimming each offer a different focus. When choosing accommodation, you can consider which of these activities matters most to you during your stay.
The Wider Destination of Traunstein
The wider destination of Traunstein offers a broader perspective on the region’s landscape and culture. Lake Chiemsee and Lake Waginger See are both in Traunstein district. The Chiemgau Alps are home to more than 170 alpine pastures and peaks reaching heights of up to 2,000 meters. The lakes and alpine heights thus represent distinct landscapes within the district.
The Seeon Lakes are designated a nature reserve in Traunstein district. The area around Lake Waginger See and Lake Tachinger See is designated a landscape conservation area. These protected areas are distinct regional points of interest, separate from the trails and leisure activities in Trostberg.
Traunstein’s salt-making history can also be traced at specific sites: the preserved saltworks houses and the saltworks chapel offer insight into the city’s significant salt-making history. The saltworks chapel is the largest chapel in Germany. A historical city walk passes the Kulturforum Klosterkirche before continuing to the saltworks chapel, the saltworks houses and Salinenpark, built in 2019.
Two museums in Traunstein offer further cultural insights. The brewery museum near the Jacklturm is part of Hofbräuhaus Traunstein. The Heimathaus is home to a local history and toy museum, with exhibits on civic culture, sacred art and the history of the saltworks.
