The parish church of St. Martin marks the early settlement of the elevated ridge above the Mindel Valley. In Unteregg, a specific site connected to the village’s history meets living cultural traditions. Trails in the municipality and destinations in the surrounding area offer a range of experiences.

St. Martin and the historic ensemble

The medieval parish church dates from the 15th century and bears the date 1477. It is an unrendered tuff-stone ashlar building: a hall church with a recessed choir and a northern tower topped by a pointed spire. The church was remodelled around 1720/30. Its address is Kirchstraße 10.

The village ensemble includes the church, the historic rectory and the Gasthaus Adler. The rectory at Kirchstraße 11 also contributes to the historic architecture: the two-storey building has a hipped roof and a moulded wooden eaves cornice and dates from around 1780. The village’s history can therefore be read in several different types of building, whose architectural forms are distinct from one another.

Music and Maypole traditions

Cultural life also has a contemporary side. The Unteregg-Oberegg brass band plays a prominent role, with almost 50 active musicians. For many years, the Maypole Friends of Unteregg have been known for their imaginatively decorated maypoles, which have often received the highest awards. Music and Maypole traditions thus offer a different perspective on the village than the stone reminders of its history.

Hiking on different scales

Within the municipality, the 16-kilometre “Around the Drei-Länder-Stein” hiking trail winds through woodland and open countryside. Explanatory signs stand at the three-sided boundary marker. The Drei-Länder-Stein itself is in the forest in the Warmisried/Bayersried area, by the lower Schwarzenbach. This historic boundary stone, made of red marble, dates from 1791.

A considerably longer route option is the Crescentia Pilgrimage Trail: this circular route is about 90 kilometres long and runs from Kaufbeuren via Mindelheim and Ottobeuren, returning to its starting point. It passes directly through Oberegg, not through the central village of Unteregg.

Nature destinations in the surrounding area

Outside Unteregg, in the valley of the eastern Günz, lies the Teufelsküche geological site. The landscape is marked by large, ruggedly piled blocks of consolidated glacial gravel. The site is designated a natural monument; visitors should stay on the paths.

The Katzbrui Mill is also outside Unteregg, in the surrounding area. It is an agricultural grain mill dating from the 17th century. For the walk there, the municipality recommends starting in Unteregg. Alternatively, you can drive to the car park and walk the final 100 metres. The destinations described here therefore differ both in character and in how to find your way around them.

The Unterallgäu as a wider cultural and natural region

The wider travel region of the Unterallgäu extends beyond Unteregg. The cycling and hiking trails throughout the district are uniformly signposted; there are also the Glückswege (Paths of Happiness). The Unterallgäu’s notable architectural landmarks include the Baroque basilica in Ottobeuren and Mindelburg Castle in Mindelheim. The Fugger Castle in Kirchheim houses the world-famous Cedar Hall, while the former Imperial Charterhouse in Buxheim is known for its choir stalls. These places are part of the wider regional picture and should be distinguished from the sights in Unteregg.
