Discover Kneipp, culture and nature in Unterallgäu
Accommodation in Unterallgäu
Unterallgäu combines Kneipp tradition and Baroque buildings with trails through forests and nature. The Iller forms the area’s natural boundary to the west, and the Wertach to the east. Anyone planning a trip can choose from a range of different focuses: a visit to a Kneipp health resort, cultural discoveries or a stay centred on educational and forest discovery trails.
Getting your bearings and travelling here
Unterallgäu is located along the A7 and A96 motorways. An extensive road network, rail connections and Allgäu Airport in Memmingerberg add to its accessibility. Check current transport connections when planning your trip.
Forest trails and nature experiences
Cycling and hiking trails throughout the district are signposted consistently. The Glückswege trails in Unterallgäu are another option. The Benninger Ried is easy to explore on foot and has its own educational trail and an observation platform. Those who prefer to discover nature through a forest theme will find a range of options: the 3.2-kilometre forest discovery trail in Bad Grönenbach introduces visitors to the forest ecosystem. The Buxheim forest discovery trail runs for 2.7 kilometres around the Buxheim pond and is designed to let visitors experience nature with all their senses. In the Bannwald forest near Ottobeuren, eleven stations guide visitors along the forest discovery trail.
The two trail lengths offer a concrete comparison for planning your visit: the loop around Buxheim pond is shorter than the trail in Bad Grönenbach, and the trails also differ in their respective themes. If you are travelling with children, you can choose based on whether you would rather focus on the forest ecosystem, experiencing nature with all your senses, or stations in the Bannwald forest. The Benninger Ried adds an educational trail and observation platform to these options.
Kneipp and culture in the towns
Bad Wörishofen is one of Unterallgäu’s Kneipp health resorts; Ottobeuren is a Kneipp spa town. In Ottobeuren, the Sebastian Kneipp Museum in the east wing of the monastery documents the life and work of the famous pastor through more than 2,000 exhibits. This connects the Kneipp focus with a specific insight into the person and his work.
The buildings also offer a variety of highlights. The Baroque basilica in Ottobeuren is one of Unterallgäu’s significant architectural monuments. The Fugger Castle in Kirchheim features the world-famous Cedar Hall. The former Imperial Charterhouse in Buxheim is known for its choir stalls, and Mindelburg Castle in Mindelheim is also one of Unterallgäu’s significant architectural monuments. The selection thus ranges from Baroque architecture to a distinctive hall and a monastery building known for its choir stalls.
When visiting Mindelburg Castle, it is important to distinguish between the castle courtyard and the observation tower: the courtyard is open year-round, while the castle keep, which has been converted into an observation tower, is open from April to October. The tower’s season may therefore be a deciding factor when planning your visit, while the courtyard is accessible all year.
Seasonal cuisine and finding the right accommodation
The Culinary Mile in Bad Wörishofen takes place twice a year, in spring and autumn. Numerous food stalls serve freshly prepared dishes; the individual menus may vary. If this event fits your travel plans, check the dates for your preferred travel period.
Shape your accommodation search around the places and experiences you actually want to visit, rather than choosing somewhere to stay independently of your travel plans.
