Legau: Culture, Chapels and the Iller
Accommodation in Legau
Legau can be explored in several ways: through organic food themes at the Rapunzel Welt Museum, a long pilgrimage tradition, and activities along the Iller. There is also a weekly market in the market square and a natural swimming pool. You can focus on culture and history or plan a stay more around the river, cycling, and hiking.
Discover organic food themes
The Rapunzel Welt Museum in Legau covers 600 mÂł and is all about organic food. Interactive stations explore organic farming, fair trade, and product manufacturing. This brings together different aspects of sustainable production and trade in one place. If you are interested in these topics, you can make a museum visit a cultural highlight of your trip.
Churches, pilgrimage and chapel trails
The parish church of St. Gordian and Epimachus preserves architectural elements dating back to the 13th century. The Maria Schnee pilgrimage church in Lehenbühl offers another perspective on religious history: it is one of the oldest Marian pilgrimage sites in the Allgäu, and its pilgrimage tradition can be traced back more than 500 years. Both places offer different points of interest for an outing focused on history.
The signposted Illerwinkel Chapel Trail also highlights religious architecture. It leads to chapels in the fields of the Legau parish, including St. Anne’s Chapel in Landholz and the Lourdes Chapel in Greiters. These chapels make the trail a way to visit several religious sites rather than focusing on a single church.
Experience the Iller on foot, by bike or by canoe
In the Legau district of Sack, the Illersteg footbridge crosses the Iller and has a viewing platform. At the Illererlebnissteg, visitors can climb a tower with a viewing platform. River views and vantage points are among the experiences on offer in Legau and its districts.
If you prefer to explore on foot, there is a 3.62-kilometre hike of moderate difficulty that leads to the Illererlebnissteg. A cycling tour offers a different focus: the “Water Experience in the Illerwinkel” route passes through Legau and continues past the environmental education centre to the Iller near the Legau experience footbridge. The hike is described by its length and difficulty; for the cycling tour, the route through Legau and onward to the Iller is a useful point of reference.
You can also canoe on the Iller in the district of Sack. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the river, villages, and buildings. Walking, cycling, and being on the water offer different ways to experience the Iller landscape.
Weekly market and natural swimming pool
A weekly market is held in Legau’s market square every Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. If you plan to visit, check the times beforehand, as recurring schedules can change. Since 2004, the Legau natural swimming pool has offered chlorine-free swimming in a regenerative bathing pond. If you are planning a swim, it is worth checking the current opening hours.
Choose accommodation to suit your travel plans
When looking for accommodation in Legau, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. Would you mainly like to visit the museum, churches, and chapels, or are cycling and experiences along the Iller your priority? The weekly market or natural swimming pool may also be important to your plans. If you want to combine several interests, prioritise the outings that matter most to you.
When considering specific offers, check their location in relation to the places you want to visit during your stay. For a day that includes a market visit, the listed Friday hours are a useful planning guide; for swimming plans, check the natural pool’s current opening hours.
