Antdorf: Churches, Customs and Routes Through Meadows and Forests
Accommodation in Antdorf
In Antdorf, historic churches and chapels meet recurring customs and routes through meadows and forests. This means you can shape your stay in a variety of ways: around architectural history and religious traditions, or by exploring the landscape on foot and by bicycle. Destinations in the wider Weilheim-Schongau area also add to the choice, without requiring you to focus on any one theme.
Churches and chapels with a history of their own
The parish church of St. Peter and Paul stands on a hill above the village and defines its appearance. The Wessobrunn master builder Caspar Feichtmayr built it between 1688 and 1694; it was most recently restored in 2002 and 2003. The Kirnberg Chapel, Antdorf’s largest chapel, is also on a hill, south of Antdorf. It contains a ceiling painting created in 1794 by Munich painter Franz Seraph Kirzinger. Both buildings offer different points of interest for anyone interested in sacred architecture and its artistic details.
Another historic site is the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Antdorf’s Frauenrain district. It was already in existence around 1440 and has always been a place of Marian devotion. Its massive walls are Romanesque in style; the square tower, built of tuff blocks and rubble stone, has a gabled roof. Here, the approximate early date and visible architectural features are intertwined with a long-standing religious significance.
Customs through the year
Two special occasions are part of Antdorf’s local customs. A maypole is erected every three years, and the Maypole Run takes place the following Sunday. On the Sunday after Corpus Christi, worshippers process through Antdorf in a Eucharistic procession after the festive service. The houses along the procession route are decorated with cloths, flags, flowers, candles and images of saints. The two customs differ both in occasion and frequency. If you would like to plan your trip around either one, check the current dates in advance.
Routes through meadows, forests and moorland
Cycling and hiking trails pass through Antdorf’s meadows and forests. The Antdorf Betbichl Circular Route brings together landscape and sacred sites: the route passes a Lourdes grotto, continues to the church in Frauenrain and then to the chapel on Kirnberg. It also offers expansive views of the Alpine massif; visibility depends on the weather. If you enjoy combining several churches and a grotto on one outing, this route offers a different focus from the Höllfilz Trail.
The Höllfilz Trail starts in the village centre and returns to Antdorf via the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Frauenrain. Along the way, it passes through moorland and meadows, by fields, small bodies of water and hamlets; there are also expansive views of the Alpine chain. Trail conditions and long-distance visibility may depend on the weather. To reach the Höllfilz Trail, you can take the train to Weilheim and then continue by bus to Antdorf. Check the current timetables before travelling.
The Osterseen lakes are another destination, 3 km from Antdorf, and can be reached by bicycle or on foot. Specific trail conditions may vary. They add another option to the routes around Antdorf for shaping your stay around the kind of landscape experience you are looking for.
Antdorf and the wider Weilheim-Schongau destination
Antdorf is part of the Pfaffenwinkel Tourism Association; the wider Weilheim-Schongau destination is also in the Pfaffenwinkel travel region. Those who look beyond Antdorf will find further cultural and historical themes there. The Wieskirche near Steingaden was built by Dominikus Zimmermann between 1745 and 1754 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. In Penzberg, the Mining Museum preserves the memory of the bituminous coal mining carried out there from 1796 to 1966. The museum offers multilingual tours for international visitors, families and school groups. These destinations expand the regional choice; they are not features of the churches and routes in Antdorf.
