Weilheim-Schongau is in the Pfaffenwinkel travel region. The Lech marks its western boundary, the Ammer flows through the central area, and the Loisach runs along its eastern border. Things to see and do range from church and architectural history to the history of technology, as well as trails through moorland and winter landscapes. When planning your trip, you can first consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay.

Church art and history

Wieskirche, near Steingaden, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Dominikus Zimmermann built it between 1745 and 1754. The church welcomes visitors to services, summer concerts and quiet reflection. If you plan to attend a concert, check the dates for your stay.

Mariä Geburt in Rottenbuch also brings together different eras: the former collegiate church is now a parish church and Rottenbuch’s most valuable cultural monument. The supporting association organizes guided tours and concerts; if you plan to visit, check the current programme. In Weilheim, about a third of the medieval city wall, built between around 1320 and 1360, still remains.

Technology and working history

The Penzberg Mining Museum preserves the memory of the local lignite mining industry, which operated from 1796 to 1966. Multilingual guided tours are offered for international visitors, families and school groups. This makes it easy to include the history of mining as a focus of your trip.

In Raisting, the approximately five-kilometre Erdfunkstelle hiking trail is a circular route from the railway station through the satellite earth station, passing large satellite dishes and the industrial heritage site Radom, with its historic Antenna 1. Radom Raisting is Germany’s first commercially operated satellite ground station. In Schwabsoien, the Blacksmith Museum displays a faithfully reconstructed forge with three heavy tail hammers.

Moorland trails and winter activities

The six-kilometre Schwarzlaichmoor themed trail passes through the adjoining moorland, with information panels along the way; it starts at the Hetten inn. In winter, the approximately seven-kilometre Filzloipe in Hohenpeißenberg is groomed for skating and classic cross-country skiing. Its availability depends on winter conditions.

The trail lengths offer a practical guide when choosing an activity: in Raisting, there is an approximately five-kilometre circular route; the Schwarzlaichmoor trail is six kilometres long; and the cross-country ski trail offers a separate winter option. If you prefer walking, you can compare the two footpaths; if you plan to go cross-country skiing, check conditions before your visit.

Experiences to guide your accommodation search

When looking for accommodation, it helps to decide on your priorities first: church and architectural history, the industrial past, or outdoor activities all point to different travel interests. Seasonal plans matter, too. A visit to a summer concert depends on the event date, while the ski trail depends on winter conditions. You can use the places and activities that interest you most as a starting point for planning the rest of your trip.
