Wildsteig lies in a hilly Alpine foothill landscape at the watershed between the Ammer and Lech rivers. From Wildsteig, you can enjoy views of the Ammergau Alps, the Allgäu, the Blue Land and the Lech region. Between scenic views, hiking trails, culture and winter sports, you can shape your stay around the experiences that interest you most.

Trails for active days

For a specific hike, two circular trails offer key details that are easy to compare. The W2 trail to the MĂĽhlegg viewpoint starts at the car park opposite the bakery, passes through the Illach Gorge and is about 8.5 kilometres long; the walking time is approximately 2.5 hours. W4 starts at the car park by the community hall, goes via the Wieskirche and returns to Wildsteig. At 11.5 kilometres and approximately three hours, it is longer than W2. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change seasonally.

For those comparing different distances for Nordic walking, the Nordic Walking Centre has routes of 4.9, 8.5, 10.5 and 14.5 kilometres. Three other routes pass through Wildsteig: the King Ludwig Way, the Munich Way of St James and the Meditation Trail. Cyclists can also explore Wildsteig as part of a route: the Lake Constance–Königssee Cycle Route and the Ammer–Amper Cycle Route pass through the village.

For minor bicycle repairs, there is a repair station at Pilgerhaus Wildsteig, at KirchbergstraĂźe 25, equipped with an air pump, hanging brackets and various tools. Check the condition of the station before using it.

Winter, lake and special places

In winter, the network of cross-country ski trails covers about 22 kilometres, with classic and skating tracks. As the trails are groomed by volunteers, not all of them are always prepared. One specifically named loop is Trail 2 between Schwaig and Unterhäusern: it is 5.0 kilometres long and suitable for beginners. Check in advance which trails have actually been groomed.

At Schwaigsee lake near Morgenbach in Wildsteig, there are sunbathing lawns, a car park, changing rooms, a kiosk and sanitary facilities. It is advisable to check in advance whether the facilities are available, especially outside the peak season. The Lourdes Grotto is considered the largest grotto complex in southern Germany. It was extensively renovated from 2019 to 2022 and is a distinctive cultural site in Wildsteig.

Church, pilgrim hostel and activities for children

Wildsteig’s parish church was refurnished by Provost Ambrosius and given an elegant tower; the work was completed in 1785. Pilgerhaus Wildsteig is a former municipal building that was renovated as a listed monument and is run as a pilgrim hostel. If you would like to include it in your accommodation plans, check the booking conditions in advance.

Horse-riding lessons for children can be booked through Ms Gindhart at Hauserwirt, Hausen 4. Arrange your preferred time in advance. As well as hiking and cycling, Wildsteig offers individual experiences with a direct connection to the village’s history and everyday life.

The wider region: Weilheim-Schongau

The Pfaffenwinkel travel region lies within the wider destination of Weilheim-Schongau. The Lech forms the western boundary of Weilheim-Schongau, the Ammer flows through its central area, and the Loisach runs along its eastern boundary. This wider setting brings together different themes of nature and culture that can be explored independently of the attractions in Wildsteig.

The Wieskirche near Steingaden was built by Dominikus Zimmermann between 1745 and 1754 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. It welcomes visitors to church services, summer concerts and quiet contemplation. If you are interested in a concert, check the date in advance.

The Penzberg Mining Museum preserves the memory of the local bituminous coal mining industry, which operated from 1796 to 1966. The museum offers multilingual guided tours for international visitors, families and school groups. The Radom Raisting offers a different technical perspective: it was Germany’s first commercially operated satellite ground station.
