Marzahn: Garden Culture and Local History
Accommodation in Marzahn
Marzahn brings together extensive garden culture and tangible traces of local history. The Gardens of the World make their mark with international garden culture, while the museum, post mill and village church offer other historical perspectives. For your trip, you can focus on gardens and walking paths, the history of the district, or a combination of both themes.
Gardens and Paths in the Recreation Park
The Gardens of the World in Berlin-Marzahn Recreation Park offer international garden culture across an expansive park landscape, with nine themed gardens. The recreation park covers 43 hectares and features extensive lawns, flower beds and walking paths. When planning your visit, you can choose between the themed gardens and a walk through the green spaces. If you are catering to different interests, the gardens themselves or the lawns and paths can each take center stage—two different ways to enjoy this park landscape.
The Museum and the History of the District
The Marzahn-Hellersdorf District Museum researches and presents the history of the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district and its localities: Biesdorf, Hellersdorf, Kaulsdorf, Mahlsdorf and Marzahn. It features a permanent exhibition as well as changing thematic exhibitions, combining a fixed collection of exhibits with changing thematic focuses. The museum is housed in a former village school in the village green settlement of Alt-Marzahn. The village green settlement has existed since the 13th century. This takes you from a thematic look at the district to a specific historical setting.
The Berlin-Marzahn post mill also connects a building with a vivid subject: during a guided tour, visitors can learn how grain becomes bread. Reservations are recommended. The mill is the village’s fourth post mill and has stood there since 1993. The tour is therefore a distinct focus for planning your trip, alongside the museum’s exhibitions.
Marzahn Village Church is a listed building dating from 1870–1871. Its baptismal font dates from around 1620, providing a distinctly earlier point of reference. For a different architectural perspective, visit KulturGut Marzahn, which is housed in a former three-sided farmstead. Together, the mill, church and farmstead offer different ways to incorporate architectural and local history into your travel plans.
More Park Profiles in the Wider Destination of Berlin
The wider destination of Berlin offers additional parks to visit. Tiergarten is Berlin’s largest and most visited inner-city park and is ideal for walking, outdoor activities and picnics. Tempelhofer Feld is a large public park where people picnic, sunbathe and play sports. These examples differ from Marzahn’s international themed gardens in the activities mentioned and offer additional park-focused options for planning a trip to Berlin.
When choosing accommodation, it helps to first decide what kind of stay you want: should garden culture and walking paths take center stage, the history of the district, or other experiences in the wider destination of Berlin as well?
